It’s hard to find something sentimental, meaningful, affordable and long-lasting. In short, something as unique as your Mum.
Well, here at Aquila, this is what we do best. Beautiful handmade jewellery crafted with care that you won’t find anywhere else. We believe that gifting jewellery ticks all the boxes.
So, here are our five best Mother’s Day gift suggestions…you’re welcome!
Just before we start, did you know that every piece from our range is made from recycled metals? That means no ecosystems or animals and their homes are destroyed to mine the metals.
We also use strictly hypoallergenic metals, so if your Mum has sensitive skin, our jewellery isn’t an irritant for her.
Does your Mum love understated gold earrings?
These half-crescent 14ct gold vermeil hoops with a 925 sterling base metal are one of the best Mother's Day gifts because their subtle design makes them appealing to most tastes.
Timeless and unique, their size makes them ideal for everyday wear as well as special occasions.
Their design was inspired by Banda, a small island in Uganda whose inhabitants live a modest, simple and yet enriched life. It’s a beautiful and humble story for an understated pair of earrings.
Perfect for Mother’s Day, these hoops are available in silver.
Does your Mum love ornate silver necklaces?
This pendant is so incredibly detailed with its intricately carved design. Our artisans spend countless hours crafting each pendant using age-old techniques and hand-held tools to create intricate designs that honour their ancestors' legacy of silversmithing.
Every necklace is made from quality 925 sterling silver and has taken its design from a hand-carved decoration found in Ubud, Bali.
The pendant comes with a Boston link chain that is both adjustable and comfortable to wear.
Does your Mum love statement rings?
If the answer is yes, then look no further!
Made from quality 925 sterling silver and 18ct solid gold, this mixed metal boho ring displays the raw beauty of both metals side by side.
The intricate dot work on the ring is a tribute to the spiritual significance of the circle, known as the 'Mandala'. It is a symbol of connection and harmony with the cosmos.
It is also synonymous with the royal history and divine energy of the stunning Mandalay in Myanmar.
What a beautiful ode to the physical and spiritual world around us for Mother’s Day.
Does your Mum’s eyes light up at the sight of a boho bracelet?
If the answer is yes, then she has impeccable taste— us too!
This bracelet is jewellery gifting at its finest.
This piece is crafted by hand using 925 sterling silver & 14ct gold vermeil. Its hinge claw shape means it's adjustable to fit a variety of wrist shapes, and its unique design means you won’t see it on the high street (anywhere).
It’s one of those pieces that people stop and ask you where you got it from.
Inspired by the diverse landscapes of Palawan island in the Philippines, this bracelet captures the contrasting and powerful beauty of nature living side by side. What a meaningful way to connect to the world around us, don’t you think?
We find it’s a popular gift for Mums during all seasons and one of the most Unique Mother's Day Gifts you’ll find.
Does your Mum love no-fuss jewellery she doesn’t need to take off?
If so, meet the solid 9ct gold Agonda ring.
Its hand-hammered texture has been inspired by the sun-kissed beach of Agonda in Goa, where its well-trodden golden sands rise and fall.
Each ring has been carefully crafted by our artisans using hand-held tools and age-old techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.
How the ring is worn is up to the wearer! It can be used as a stacking ring or a stand-alone piece. We love it as both.
Give your mom a piece of beach serenity with the Agonda ring.
Still unsure which piece to choose for your Mum? Don’t worry! You can give her the gift of choice with an Aquila Jewellery gift card.
With values ranging from £10 to £100, these gift cards allow your Mum to have a cheeky look herself to find the perfect piece that speaks to her heart.
Delivered by email, our gift cards have no additional processing fees and no expiry dates. If your Mum prefers the in-shop experience, she can also redeem the gift card at our physical shop in Brighton.
Easy!
There you have our best Mother’s Day jewellery gift recommendations. We’re sure your Mum will love whichever one you choose. Between us — did you spot something you loved too?

Either way, we’ve got you covered with all the dos and don'ts of investing in gold jewellery, the potential benefits of doing so and how to get started.
Disclaimer: We do not claim to be experts in the field of gold investment. We sell gold jewellery items and our customers regularly ask us about the investment potential of gold jewellery. It’s for this reason we decided to research the topic and share our insights with you.
Gold jewellery can be thought of as a good financial investment due to its ability to hold value and remain pretty sturdy against inflation as well as changes in the economy.
It’s a currency that doesn’t falter too much in terms of its value.
IMPORTANT: It's key to learn that not all gold jewellery is equal in terms of investment potential.
Long-term value rules: Gold jewellery can hold sentimental value beyond its inherent value, but for use as an investment you need to also think about the gold’s long-term value, storage and insurance.
There are plenty of reasons why investing in gold jewellery could be a worthwhile pursuit!
And you don’t need to be a financial advisor or investment expert to do it — and do it well.
These are the reasons why it could be worth it:
Gold jewellery is a portable form of wealth that can be easily transported and traded. When you need money, it can be easily converted straight into cash or other assets.
Gold jewellery can be a way to diversify an investment portfolio. It's best to include a mixture of different asset classes (asset classes are groups of investments such as real estate, cash, commodities etc).
By including tangible assets like gold jewellery, you can be smart and potentially reduce risk and increase stability in your overall portfolio. In simple terms, this means you’re not putting all your eggs in one investment basket.
Gold jewellery holds cultural and emotional value for many people. It is often seen as a symbol of wealth, status, and personal sentiment. Investing in gold jewellery allows you to enjoy both the investment aspect and the emotional connection it may hold.
While the value of gold jewellery is mostly driven by the price of gold, certain pieces may appreciate over time due to their craftsmanship, historical significance, or rarity.
High-quality and one-of-a-kind gold jewellery pieces may gain value beyond the gold content alone. Take, for example, unique handmade jewellery you won’t find elsewhere.
Here's a breakdown of each type:
Solid gold jewellery is made entirely of gold and contains no other metals or alloys. It is typically labelled with the carat which shows the purity of the gold.
Aquila jewellery’s solid 9ct gold ring is a good example.
Solid gold jewellery offers the highest investment potential, as it retains its value based on the gold content alone. The drawback? It’s expensive compared to other types of gold jewellery.
Gold vermeil jewellery is made by applying a thick layer of gold (typically 10 carats or higher) onto a base metal, usually sterling silver. The gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick to be considered vermeil.
While gold vermeil jewellery can have an attractive appearance and be more affordable than solid gold, it has minimal investment potential.
Gold-plated jewellery involves a thin layer of gold applied to a base metal using the process of electroplating. The gold layer in gold-plated jewellery is usually less than 1 micron thick.
It tends to rub off over time which will diminish its value, fast. Again, not a good investment option.
Here are a few tips on how to purchase gold jewellery:
Before making any purchase, take the time to learn about gold jewellery. Research gold purity, pricing, and market trends. Gain knowledge about different types of gold jewellery, such as or designer pieces, and get clued up on their potential for investment.
It’s super important to buy gold jewellery from reputable sellers. Look for well-established jewellers, certified bullion dealers, or trusted online retailers. Check customer reviews and ratings to make sure the seller has a good reputation for selling genuine gold jewellery.
Always ensure the jewellery has proper certification that verifies its authenticity and purity.
Look for hallmarks such as the UK Assay Office hallmark, which guarantees the gold quality. Independently verify these hallmarks or certifications to ensure they are genuine.
Get price savvy and compare prices across different sellers to ensure you are getting a fair deal.
Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true, as they might indicate low-quality or counterfeit jewellery. Research the market rates for gold to have a better understanding of fair pricing.
While investment value is important, also consider the craftsmanship and design of the jewellery. If you intend to wear the jewellery or gift it in the future, choose pieces that tastefully match your style. Handmade items are often preferable.
If you are purchasing a lot of gold jewellery for investment purposes, consider how you will store it securely. Explore options like home safes, safety deposit boxes, or storage facilities offered by reputable sellers, as these are all good ways to protect your investment.
Here are a few suggestions to help you get started with where to purchase gold jewellery:
Look for reputable bullion dealers who offer gold jewellery specifically designed for investment purposes. These dealers often have a wide selection of investment-grade gold jewellery and other forms of pure gold jewellery.
Many online retailers specialise in selling gold jewellery for investment. They may even offer limited-edition pieces. Choose a retailer with a proven track record.
Gold jewellery isn’t necessarily season or event-related in terms of its availability.
While certain festivals or occasions might see the demand for gold jewellery increase, gold jewellery is consistently available year-round; that means it can be purchased for investment any time.
In terms of market trends, gold prices can fluctuate based on various economic factors, global events, and supply and demand dynamics. The value and pricing of gold varies as a result.
Investing in gold is a great way to be strategic with your wealth, and it’s an interesting hobby to start. There’s lots to learn about gold jewellery itself - namely solid gold, but with research, professional advice and the right pieces of unique jewellery you could start a new jewellery adventure which not only stands the fluctuations of the economy but appreciates in value over time.
Do you have any more advice on how to get started investing in gold jewellery? We’d love to hear in the comments below.
]]>Whether you're a piercing enthusiast or a newcomer, understanding the different types of ear piercings is the key to making the right choices about which one you want...and don’t want!
In this guide, we’ll explore the world of ear piercings, shedding light on various styles as well as learning the correct terminology so you can decorate your ears - your way.
Ear piercings have evolved beyond the standard lobe piercings many of us start with. Today, a myriad of options allows for creative expression and customisation.
With earring stacks, ear crawlers and cuffs offering plenty of opportunities for your ears, multiple ear piercings are now commonplace for many of us.
Let's take a look at the different ear piercings out there and learn if they are the ones for you.
First, take a look at this ear piercing chart to see the many different ear piercings you could get on your ears.
The classic lobe piercing forms the foundation for most initial ear piercing choices - it’s pretty much the entry point in the ear piercing world.
Positioned on the fleshy part of the ear, lobe piercings provide a versatile canvas for all earring styles.
Choose from small to large hoops, studs, drop earrings and huggie earrings in this piercing place although anything goes!
Moving upward, the helix piercing is found in the upper cartilage of the ear. This ear piercing can be situated anywhere along the upper curve of the ear's cartilage.
This popular choice allows for a range of placements, from a single helix to an intricately curated cluster.
It’s a frequent choice for those who have multiple ear piercings and It balances out lower ear piercing placements on the ear.
Those with their piercing tend to wear small hoops, huggies and sometimes small studs. We think our 10mm Gold Sleeper Hoops make the perfect choice for those who like their jewellery with a texture golden glow.
You don’t always need to go through with a piercing to get the benefits of it!
We have a range of ear cuffs that hug your ear and don’t let go, giving the illusion of a piercing like our Agonda Hammered Gold Cuff.
Cuffs are ideal for boho jewellery lovers and those who want to experiment with piercing looks - and not pain!
If you’re looking for an ear piercing you don’t see every day, try the tragus piercing!
Where is a tragus piercing?
This piercing is typically done on the raised cartilage just above the ear canal.
The rareness of tragus piercings makes them one of the more daring and trendy ear piercing choices if you’re looking for something a little bit different.
Lovers of tragus piercings tend to go for small diameter hoops, huggies and sometimes small studs in this location but hoops work better for comfort (trust me, I have them both pierced!).
Take a look at our Gold Huggies or sleeper hoops to see if they inspire your look.
No, we’re not talking about a sea shell here…
Where is a conch piercing?
The conch piercing is found in the central concave area of the ear, known as the concha. It can be done in two places: the inner conch (closer to the ear canal) or the outer conch (towards the outer rim).
Both options are pretty popular and give an interesting visual texture to your ears and earring stacks.
Hoop earrings and stud earrings are often used here. The large surface area of the conch allows for the combo of bold, statement pieces or a collection of smaller, delicate earrings for a curated ear project.
Understanding the correct terminology means you can ask for exactly what you want (and don’t want) from the piercer in the piercing shop.
Or perhaps you can step in when a friend asks for the wrong piercing!
It’s also good practice to know the terminology because if your piercing gets infected you can easily communicate the problem and location of the piercing for swifter care.
Let's break down some key terms associated with ear piercings:
Distinguishing between cartilage and lobe piercings is crucial - no one wants the wrong piercing!
Lobe piercings involve the soft, fleshy part of the ear, while cartilage piercings target the tougher, higher regions. Both have different pain levels, healing time and earring options.
This refers to how the earring fastens, including options like butterfly backs, sleeper posts and hinged closures.
The length of time it takes for a piercing to fully heal which varies based on the type of piercing. Earlobe piercings typically take 4 to 6 weeks, while cartilage piercings may require 6 months to a year.
The care and cleaning routine necessary to promote proper healing after getting a piercing.
Common aftercare practices include regular cleaning with a saline solution, avoiding trauma to the piercing, and avoiding contact with irritants.
Only touch your piercing when necessary, too much fiddling with it and there is a chance it will become infected and inflamed.
We hope you feel more confident about naming some of the common (and less common) types of ear piercings you may have or are planning to get. And that we have demystified the terminology relating to ear piercings.
So whether you are planning on getting a few new piercings or are just piercing-curious you can now confidently search for and ask for what you want - and help your friends!

In this blog, we'll explain why jewellery is a meaningful Christmas gift option and give you five unique jewellery gift ideas for the special people in your life.
At Aquila Jewellery, we specialise in sustainable, handmade gifts that bring a personal and sentimental touch to Christmas gifting, far beyond the usual; It’s what makes us different to other shops on the high street.
For us, jewellery is the perfect gift to give. And here are the reasons why:
When gifting jewellery as a Christmas gift, you're not just giving someone a piece of metal. You're giving them a tangible reminder of how important they are to you - especially if it is handmade.
Handmade jewellery is meticulously made taking great care and great craftsmanship. As a result, each piece is often one-of-a-kind, just like the person receiving it as a gift. And who doesn’t like to feel special?
By choosing jewellery for Christmas gifts, you can select items based on the uniqueness of your loved one. Do they wear rings and pendants already? Are they into gold or silver? Do they love statement pieces or are they into more minimal and everyday jewellery?
It can be a very rewarding experience to take the time and effort to choose jewellery for someone you love. And seeing their reaction when they open it is equally fulfilling.
Gifting jewellery from a handmade brand is not only a great way to find one-of-a-kind pieces that stand out from the crowd, but it also allows you to support talented artisans.
By choosing handmade, you're prioritising craftsmanship, quality, and individuality over mass-produced items.
You can feel good knowing that your gift is not only special and meaningful but also helping to sustain the creative community and make a positive impact during the holiday season.
Because let’s be honest - does anyone really want toiletry sets entombed in plastic every year?
Of course it depends where you buy your jewellery, but if you head over to an independent shop for your Christmas gifts, you can be assured that every piece of jewellery has been crafted with precision and care.
In the time it takes to make one piece, one hundred pieces have already flown out of a factory. It’s the human element vs that of a factory too. Art vs fashion.
Jewellery is known for its durability and longevity.
By selecting high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship, you're giving a gift that will stand the test of time.
Quality jewellery really retains its beauty and value especially if you invest in maintenance and upkeep. It's a meaningful way to show someone that you value their presence in your life for years to come.
Lastly, buying jewellery from independent shops supports local artisans and small businesses - like our artisans’ businesses across the world and…us!
We love the local Brighton community we are in that fosters small businesses!
Being part of this community is a reminder that when you buy local and independent you are also supporting a unique vision and a more personalised customer experience.
Jewellery is a great gift to mark a special occasion with. Whether it’s a birthday, a wedding, a symbol of friendship or beyond, it carries a sentimental weight to it that other gifts don’t.
At Christmas time it’s an opportunity to show someone you care with a jewellery piece that symbolises your bond. It's a gift that goes beyond just material value.
OK, that’s the serious bit done!
There's an unparalleled sentimentality in giving handmade gifts, and our new sparkly Hella pendant available in 925 sterling silver or 14ct gold vermeil is the perfect choice.
This pendant is not only seasonally sparkly and the perfect jewellery gift for her, but it comes with a beautiful story inspired by Hella, Iceland, where clear night skies present a network of stars - even the Northern Lights (if you are lucky!).
Break away from socks, plastic cheap items and other predictable Christmas gifts and consider the Solid 9ct Gold Ring.
Handcrafted to perfection, this ring is a testament to the skilled artisans who create them.
Beyond being a beautiful and hard-wearing accessory, it's a piece that is both valuable in solid gold and a lovely visual reminder of the bond you share.
Gold is timeless and this ring is an opportunity to give a meaningful gift to the ladies you love. Wear matching ones with your friends for life!
We also have a Palawan Unisex bracelet made from recycled 925 sterling silver, age-old techniques and nothing but traditional handheld tools.
This is a lovely gift for any man in your life with its unique woven rope design and with a bit of care and attention, it has a long life ahead of it.
Pick out a gift for your Mum that's not just special but also eco-friendly like the Palawan Mixed Metal Adjustable Rope Bracelet.
Crafted from recycled metals, this piece not only showcases the brand's commitment to sustainability but also embodies the beauty of contrasting mixed metals and age-old techniques.
The adjustable design ensures a perfect fit, this piece of jewellery is a popular gift with our customers loving the symmetry, fine filigree and jawan work displayed.
The design has taken its inspiration from the incredibly diverse landscapes and ecosystems of Palawan island, Philippines.
Our popular pick all year round are these unique Maasai Gold Feather-Shaped Drop Earrings also available in silver.
Shaped and designed with intricate goldsmithing techniques to match the feather plumes of an Ostrich, each earring has been handmade to pay homage to these striking animals which run wild across the plains of the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya, Africa.
You can also find Aquila Jewellery on NotOnTheHighStreet.

But do you know how to match your jewellery and makeup to take your style to the next level?
In this guide, we'll take a look at the art of harmonising jewellery with makeup (yes, it is an art!) offering you a unique perspective on how to couple your boho jewellery choices with just the right makeup that pops.
We can’t start this blog without giving a nod to the bohemian approach to jewellery and makeup which leans towards a more natural aesthetic.
Effortless looks that embody freedom and liberation are the essence of boho style and represent Aquila Jewellery through and through.
And with bohemian flair comes the canvas for artistic expression and creativity, allowing for exploration with colours, textures, and looks.
While it might not be an immediately obvious pairing, makeup and jewellery can work in perfect harmony to enhance your features, draw attention to your skin, and accentuate your jewellery.
After all, celebrities (or rather their team of stylists and makeup artists) do it all the time!
It all begins with choosing colours that work with your skin tone, attire, and the occasion.
It’s a great way to decide whether to choose gold or silver jewellery, too.
Here are some pointers:
Gold jewellery complements warm-toned makeup, such as gold and brown eyeshadows and warm lip shades, making it ideal for evening events. Our beautiful gold collection features a neutral gold tone that suits and flatters all skin tones (yes, your skin tone too!).
Silver or white gold jewellery pairs well with cool-toned makeup, like pastel eyeshadows and cool lip shades, offering a modern and fresh look suitable for daytime outings.
Side note —we don’t mean reliving the 80s with those pastels. Think of eye colours with shimmer or iridescence for a fresh take.
Explore our silver collection, which includes both rustic and minimal everyday pieces with a boho edge.
Before diving into the specifics of makeup and jewellery pairing, it's crucial to consider the occasion. Different events demand varying levels of glamour and formality.
For casual brunches or daytime gatherings, opt for a relaxed and natural look.
Light foundation, nude lips, and a touch of mascara can create a fresh look that pairs nicely with understated jewellery choices like t-shirts, high-neck tops, and casual jumpers adorned with necklaces and simple stud earrings.
Consider bolder makeup and jewellery for formal evenings such as weddings or cocktail parties. Dramatic makeup, like red lips and winged eyeliner, paired with statement gold or silver drop earrings or unique statement pieces, can make a strong impact.
Did you know that makeup and jewellery can be coordinated based on colour schemes?
Coordinating the colours of your makeup and jewellery can really bring together an overall look, so start experimenting!
Use makeup shades that complement the colours of your jewellery.
For example, if you're wearing gold earrings, metallic bronze or earthy gold eyeshadow can enhance their hue. You don’t need to go full Grace Jones with this but using your jewellery as a guide for matching tones is a wonderfully natural way to guide your makeup choices.
Creating a monochromatic appearance where your makeup and jewellery share a similar colour can offer a cohesive look.
While matching bold makeup with bold jewellery can be striking, striking the right balance is essential to avoid looking overdone.
We love Joan Collins, but that isn’t what we’re going for here.
If you opt for bold eyeshadow or vibrant lipstick, keep your jewellery understated. Choose smaller stud earrings or delicate bracelets to ensure your makeup remains the focal point, with the jewellery complementing it.
On the other hand, when wearing a dramatic statement piece like a chunky necklace or oversized earrings, go for subtle makeup.
Neutral eyeshadows, nude lips, and a light blush can complement your jewellery without overpowering your face.
Related content: Which earrings best suit my face shape
The neckline of your outfit and the earrings you choose play a vital role in achieving a cohesive look:
These necklines provide an excellent opportunity to showcase a dramatic necklace, like the Palawan Mixed Metal Necklace.
Select a necklace that complements the neckline's shape and depth, and opt for stud earrings or small hoops to maintain a balanced look.
When wearing a high neckline, focus on earrings instead. Statement earrings or dangling designs can draw attention to your face, adding length to your neck and décolletage.
Whether it’s a formal function, a casual day visit, a choice of necklines or your skin tone, pairing makeup with your jewellery can make a real impact.
Have fun, experiment and don’t forget to look at your jewellery for inspiration and let it inform your choices.
Do you have any makeup and jewellery pairing tips of your own? Feel free to share them in the comments below – we'd love to hear from you!

In the last year, we’re proud to say we’ve made substantial headway in our sustainable jewellery journey, which all started with our recycled silver pledge a few years ago.
But where are we now?
Join us as we cover our journey and the next steps in our sustainable jewellery future.
In an age where sustainability and ethical practices are paramount, we recognise that we need to create sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly jewellery that respects our values, our customers and the world around us.
It’s often long-winded, time-consuming and tricky work refining processes but we’re getting there.
So, what have we achieved so far?
Our sterling silver pieces were the first to launch us as a brand and silver has always been a precious metal close to our hearts.
But when we discovered the true cost of silver mining on nature, humans and the atmosphere, we knew we needed to opt for recycled silver.
We concentrated our efforts on transitioning our silver over to recycled silver first, then we moved on to gold this year.
We moved away from our original gold tone this year and opted for a softer, more neutral gold tone thanks to the feedback of our customers.
And with the new gold tone comes our transition into recycled gold. Every new gold jewellery piece is now made from recycled gold.
We are thrilled to announce that we are now a fully recycled jewellery brand!
Want to know why we opted to recycle our precious metals?
Precious metal mining has devastating effects on the land and life around it. It can lead to habitat destruction, deforestation and a large amount of soil erosion.
Due to the large-scale open-pit nature of mining and the disruptive nature of the bulldozers and excavators, the landscape is often altered causing extensive damage to the natural ecosystems - not to mention affecting the indigenous populations.
Mining is also a very energy-demanding process which adds to dangerous levels of carbon emission and in turn, contributes to the irreversible effects of climate change.
When the metal is extracted, chemicals like cyanide are frequently used which seep into the surrounding ecosystems and water sources.
When these contaminants drain into the water sources nearby such as lakes and rivers, aquatic life is harmed and humans can be too if they come into contact with the contaminated water.
The damage extends to humans too, who often work in unregulated and unsafe conditions, being exposed to dust inhalation and the chemicals used in the refining processes.
By choosing to work with sustainably focused organisations that ensure ethically sourced metals, we as jewellers can help to alleviate some of the damage of the silver and gold mining industry.
At Aquila Jewellery we only use recycled silver from our Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) suppliers. It mostly comes from scrap metal.
The recycling of sterling silver takes place outside of our artisan's premises. They buy it from UMICORE - a circular metals technology company with a sustainable edge.
PIC
Here is the recycled silver process that our silver goes through.
So, is any silver purity lost?
No silver purity is lost in the process.
The silver that is extracted during the recycled silver process is just as good quality as it would be if it were mined straight from the ground.
Our artisans receive the recycled silver and then get to work making beautiful boho jewellery pieces.
Our gold goes through a similar process.
No purity is lost in the gold recycling process either.
We searched high and low for the right suppliers in Thailand that suited our needs.
We wanted a quality supplier who was on the RJC list. This is so we and our customers can always be assured that our supply chain is conflict-free, sustainable and responsible.
To know that we are part of regulated practices is a huge step forward and we are proud to be associated with individuals, companies and organisations that care about the world like we do.
The RJC is a globally recognised organisation and standards body which focuses on the production of responsible jewellery throughout the entire supply chain.
From precious metal miners to jewellery sellers, it unites companies in their mission to provide responsible, sustainable business without harming people or the planet.
The result? Eco jewellery that doesn’t cost the earth.
We’ve mentioned this before but our dedication to this is ongoing.
We are passionate about fair and ethical working conditions for our artisans. It is of the ultimate importance to us that they are in a safe working environment and are paid a fair wage. The RJC also ensures this is the case.
We know they are paid a fair wage because we pay them and we regularly visit them at all of their jewellery workshops to ensure that is still the case.
It’s very important to us to also support social sustainability as well as environmental sustainability.
We made sure from the beginning to use natural and recyclable materials for our packaging.
We have uncoated craft boxes, canvas bags and cardboard. All in neutral colours and without being coated in harsh chemicals.
We are looking into locally sourced natural fabrics to reduce the carbon footprint further.
Just like charity starts at home, so does sustainability.
Here are some of the small, but important processes we have put into place in our shop.
We encourage energy-saving habits such as turning off lights and electronic devices when not in use. We’re looking into energy-efficient appliances and lighting options in our space.
We have embraced paperless processes by transitioning to digital documents, online communication, and cloud storage. This reduces paper waste and lowers our carbon footprint.
Our employees use bikes, their legs and very occasionally buses to get to the shop.
It’s been a busy time and we’ve taken some significant steps in our journey. We thank you for joining us during this discovery time and hope you feel we are doing our bit to give back.
What does sustainability mean for you? Is there something you do every day for the environment you’d like to share?

Join us as we take a look at boho wedding jewellery for you, your friends, family and guests. From bridesmaid's bracelets to wedding bands and more, let’s explore all the options for those who love to boho.
Boho jewellery is all about expressing yourself by layering, stacking, mixing metals and creating textures. Boho as an aesthetic is clothes in a neutral palette made from natural materials which often come in relaxed, oversized styles.
Hair is naturally and loosely worn, tousled, and casually styled.
The look stems from the free-spirited and nomadic nature of a boho person, with boho jewellery a representation of this lifestyle.
So, what boho jewellery brings you some unique options for that special day?
Drop earrings are always a big wedding jewellery trend and bring drama, movement and elegance, particularly with an up-do.
Most brides opt for silver (although gold brings a beautiful warm autumnal and summer glow) as it marries well with a white dress and shoes.
Our Maasai Silver Feather-Shaped Drop Earrings have a design inspired by the wild ostriches of the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya, Africa; with their feather plumes inspiring the shape.
They are a customer favourite and display the expert craftsmanship of our skilled artisans who use only their bare hands and traditional tools to make them.
Bringing the inspiration of nature into your wedding look is a very boho way of acknowledging the beauty of the world around us.
Another firm favourite are the Gold Trip Drop Earrings - also available in 925 sterling silver. They have a light reflective quality due to their hand-hammered texture - perfect for a bit of wedding sparkle.
Another bonus is the drop of the three metal disks which elongate the face, making it appear slimmer. On this topic, if you’re interested in which earrings best suit your face shape take a look at our blog.
Pair a set of drop earrings with huggies stacked up the ear and even an ear cuff in silver or gold to complete a layered boho look.
We’ve had quite a few couples across the world opt for wedding bands from Aquila Jewellery.
Our range of travel-inspired, handmade rings make a sentimental and unique choice for those who appreciate careful craftsmanship and unique designs.
One of our rings frequently purchased as a wedding band is the Agra ring. This chunky mixed metal ring has been designed with the Taj Mahal in mind, referencing its sleek domes, tiles and calligraphy.
It is a 7mm ring, made with quality 925 oxidised sterling silver and 18ct solid gold and is the perfect couple's band for those who want unconventional wedding bands.
Another top choice is our Brighton ring. This 5mm band has the quirky landscape of Brighton woven into its design and comes in 925 oxidised sterling silver and 18ct solid gold. Our customers have used it as unisex wedding ring.
We had wonderful news that a couple got married at the Brighton bandstand wearing our Ubud Rings. Made from 925 sterling silver and 18ct solid gold each ring’s design represents the uniform landscape of Ubud, Bali.
Every one of these rings brings a rustic and earthy take on wedding jewellery whether worn as a bride’s band, a couples band or a promise ring.
We always celebrate individuality and appreciate that there are many ways to express your intentions. Our promise rings offer a unique way to show love your way with handmade designs such as our quirky 925 sterling silver Samar Promise Ring - also available in gold vermeil.
This particular ring took its inspiration from the Philippine island of Samar, where jagged rocks and charged waterfalls meet, joining two natural forces as they collide.
For beautiful gifts for bridesmaids we can recommend our Hammered Silver Bracelet Cuffs which are size adjustable and can also be engraved with a personalised message on the back, in our shop.
Made from quality 925 sterling silver each cuff is not only handmade but comes from hypoallergenic, recycled silver. Why not treat all your bridesmaids to a sentimental gift that extends beyond your special day?
Our Agonda Collection is the ideal go-to for boho jewellery wedding sets. Choose from hand-hammered gold or silver bracelets, pendants, ear cuffs, toe rings and earrings and mix and match your metals for an all over boho look.
Our boho jewellery extends beyond just the bride, groom and bridal party. We offer beautiful toe rings for warm wedding days where your feet are free to feel the sun.
For those who want some statement boho jewellery, our range of chunky and unique pieces provide a departure from everyday high street jewellery and a boho journey through effortless style.
As you can see, boho jewellery offers plenty of options for wedding day jewellery, from travel-inspired bands to bridesmaid’s cuffs . So if you want a relaxed and natural look on that special day, go boho.
Have you had or been to a boho wedding? What jewellery did you wear? We’d love to hear in the comments.

Let’s take a deep dive into all the pros and cons of gold and silver so you can learn which metal or metals are best for you.
The purity and the quality of the gold and silver are important jumping-off points as these are often the deciding factors for purchase as they influence the price.
Did you know that the purity of silver is expressed in terms of parts per thousand or minimal fineness? Pure silver is thought to be 999 fine which makes 99% silver (alongside some impurities).
As it’s too soft to work on alone, it is alloyed with other metals like copper to make it more malleable and strong. Take 925 sterling silver, for example. It has 925 fineness as it is made from 92.5% silver and 7.5 additional metals.
The higher the number the better the quality with 975 sterling silver usually being the highest purity jewellery for sale, at a higher price point.
Silver jewellery often comes with hallmarks or stamps that display their quality and authenticity so buyers can identify their genuineness. As an example, 925 sterling silver is stamped ‘925’.
The pro about silver is that you can get a much higher purity of silver for a much lower price point than with gold.
Aquila Jewellery use 925 sterling silver so our jewellery is stamped with ‘925’. This purity offers an affordable price point along with excellent quality.
Pure gold is 24 karats meaning it is 99.9% gold. Like silver, it’s too soft to use alone so it’s common to alloy it with other metals.
Some gold purities you might come across are 18kt (75% gold) and 14kt (58.3% gold). Gold also comes with hallmarks just like silver. As a rule, the higher the karat the better the quality.
So when it comes to budget, silver is a better option for the purity you get.
But which metal is a better investment?
Gold and silver are often thought of as alternative investments to traditional financial assets.
They tend to retain their value fairly well and can even help protect against fluctuations and times of economic uncertainty during which they are considered ‘safe havens’.
The value of silver jewellery does not appreciate significantly. It is subject to change when taking into consideration demand, fashion trends, and consumer preferences. Wear and tear also plays a factor and don’t forget retail markup (the same applies for gold).
A pro for silver is that it can be melted down and reset into another jewellery piece and it never loses any purity.
A pro for gold is that it tends to hold its value well. It carries an intrinsic value due to its rarity, global demand and resale potential.
Currently, the market value of 99.9% gold is nearly 80% more expensive per ounce than 99.9% silver.
So, one of the factors to consider when choosing between gold or silver jewellery is whether you are viewing your choice as a long-term investment or short term.
For up-to-date market values check out royalmint.
Generally speaking people with warm tones in their skin colouring tend to suit warm metals such as gold as it tends to complement the natural warmth of their complexion.
Cool skin tones, on the other hand, frequently have a pink or bluish undertone, and individuals with cool skin tones typically find silver the most flattering choice. This is due to silver complementing the natural coolness of their complexion.
Of course, this doesn’t apply to everyone.
At Aquila Jewellery we recognised that we want our jewellery to be inclusive of everyone in every way. So, we are in the process of changing our gold to a more neutral gold called 14k Hamilton vermeil. It is currently exclusively available in our shop so pop in and take a look for yourself.
Gold has a vivid and vibrant yellow colour which is very distinct. It is a shade that occurs naturally. There is an earthiness to gold that often appeals to those who lean towards a warm colour palette.
There are many different gold shades such as yellow gold, white gold and rose gold. We use traditional yellow gold to keep our pieces as natural as possible.
Silver has a shiny white lustre and a cooler tone. Its subtle colour makes it popular due to its timeless and classic appeal.
It’s worth including reflectivity here - with silver being the most reflective metal, reflecting around 95% of visible light. Gold reflects approximately 70-80% of visible light. This results in different visual characteristics and is down to the preference of the customer.
This is one of the interesting differences between gold and silver as precious metals. Did you know that gold is relatively rare in the Earth’s crust, making it a precious metal?
It is this scarcity that contributes to its value and desirability.
In terms of geological abundance, silver is fairly common. Plus it is often the byproduct of other mining metals such as zinc and copper. That means its availability is frequently influenced by the demand for these metals.
These might not be factors you immediately consider when it comes to gold and silver, but it influences longevity, maintenance and wearability going forwards.
Whilst gold and silver are both fairly soft metals, gold is denser and more malleable making it softer to work with when creating intricate designs.
The con? It picks up more scratches and dents than silver.
Silver is less dense and less malleable but stronger and more resistant to scratches and dents. It is also easy to work with in terms of creating intricate designs when mixed into an alloy.
That’s why we always use sterling silver (silver and copper) as our base metal for our gold vermeil pieces - resulting in quality pieces that don’t carry the cost of solid gold.
Both metals can be crafted into beautifully ornate jewellery due to these properties.
Gold is chemically inert which means it doesn’t react with most substances. It is famously resistant to tarnish, corrosion and rust.
As a pro, gold easily keeps its shine over time (though a bit of maintenance and upkeep is still a good idea) and generally ages well.
A con for silver is that it is prone to tarnishing when exposed to sulfur in the air and certain substances, forming a dark oxide layer. However, this tarnish can be polished or removed easily with regular upkeep.
Sometimes when gold is mixed in an alloy or as a result of impurities some wearers may experience a reaction but generally speaking, gold is hypoallergenic.
Silver is hypoallergenic when it is mixed in an alloy of copper. Those with sensitive skin tend to react to nickel alloys, which is why we always use copper in our sterling silver.
All of our gold, silver and mixed metal items are hypoallergenic.
There is no denying gold and silver mining have significant sustainability and ethical implications.
While the industry has taken steps to address these issues, there is still much work to be done to ensure that mining is conducted in a responsible and sustainable manner that respects the environment and human rights.
However, there are organisations and initiatives that can guarantee that your gold or silver are ethical.
We work with a supplier in the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). They have developed a certification program that covers the entire jewellery supply chain, including mining, refining, and manufacturing.
That way, jewellers and customers know the jewellery they buy is ethical.
Our silver collection is made from recycled silver which means we don’t rely on mining and silver availability to provide our products (and we don’t contribute to deforestation or the environmental impacts of silver mining).
As you can see, choosing between gold and silver isn’t as simple as preference. With aspects such as investment potential, sustainability and longevity to consider it really comes down to you and your lifestyle.
So, whether you prefer the warm, sunny look of gold or the cool, understated look of silver, we have silver, gold and mixed metal collections to kickstart your exploration.
And with our commitment to using recycled and hypoallergenic materials, you can feel good about your purchase and its impact on the planet.
Which metal is your favourite and why? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
]]>Join us as we take a look at face shapes and how certain earrings complement them.
The typical face shapes are oval, square, round, triangle, heart and diamond shape.
There are a few ways to identify which face shape you have and some are more involved than others! Try out some of these methods below to discover yours.
Put your hair up and off your face so you can clearly see the outline of your face. Take a good look at your facial features- your forehead, cheekbones and jawline. It’s a useful way to identify characteristics you have and understand where they sit and essentially the core of what face shape group you fit into.
If you have a rounded chin perhaps you have a round face shape. Or you might have large eyes and a pointed jaw, meaning you may have a heart-shaped face.
A useful way of finding out is by using a washable pen and drawing your face outline on the mirror. Take a look at the finished result. The team at Aquila Jewellery had fun with this one!
If you’d like to get scientific and measure your proportions you can follow this Cosmopolitan guide with the aid of The Wisdom of Your Face author and Chinese face reading expert Jean Haner.
In a few minutes you can get all the info you need from an app that maps out your face and analyses its shape. Try Find Your Face Shape.
A general approach is not to choose earrings that mirror your face shape, but earrings that are the exact opposite of your face shape! So if you have a round face you don’t choose hoops, you choose dangle earrings.
Oval faces have gentle curves and proportions such as foreheads wider than the chin, high and prominent cheekbones and a soft rounded jawline.
They tend to suit all styles of earrings. From teardrop earrings to large hoop earrings, those with oval faces can wear any style easily.
DO
Wear hoops. They are perfect for oval face shapes as they draw attention to the cheekbones.
Why not try our Banda textured gold creole hoops? They are half-crescent shaped, uniquely textured and ideal for everyday wear and special occasions too.
DON’T
It’s best to avoid very narrow, long earrings in case they elongate the face further making it look drawn.
Round faces have a circular shape and often have a forehead as wide as the cheekbones. They have soft cheekbones, a rounded jawline and no prominent angles or corners.
DO
Choose long earrings. Why? Because the length of the earrings draws the eye down, creating the illusion of length. Choose elongated earrings like teardrop earrings or dangle earrings which elongate round faces.
Our Agonda gold trio drop earrings are the perfect choice with their eye-catching texture, movement and of course, length. Wear your hair off your face to let the earrings shine.
DON'T
Avoid large hoop earrings as they can accentuate the roundness of your face and make it appear wider than it is.
A square face shape is characterised by a straight forehead and a strong jawline. The overall appearance is symmetrical and angular.
DOFor a square face shape choose earrings that draw attention away from the jawline, like large hoop earrings. By picking earrings that bring some curves and softness, the contrast i face shape and earring proportions should work out nicely.
Our Agonda large hammered gold earrings should do just the trick. Round and soft, they bring curves to your face. Don’t forget that regular maintenance will have your earrings looking as lovely as the day you bought them.
DON’T
Square-shaped and angular earrings are going to accentuate the dimensions of a square face so it’s best to steer clear.
Also known as a an ‘inverted pear shape’ those with a triangle face shape tend to have a wide forehead, cheeks that are narrower than the forehead and a pointed chin.
DO
Go for earrings that balance out the face and draw attention to the upper part of the face.
Stud earrings are a good choice like our Palawan mixed metal round studs.
DON’T
Avoid earrings with an angular shape at the bottom or long thin earrings as these may make the jaw shape more prominent.
Go for earrings that balance out the face and draw attention to the upper part of the face.
A heart-shaped face has a broader forehead, wide cheekbones and a narrow jawline and chin that taper down the face and round at the bottom.
DO
Small to medium-sized hoop earrings will work well by elongating the face shape. Our Banda 925 sterling silver creole hoops will soften any angles and also bring an eye catching sheen when in sunlight.
DON’T
Try not to wear pointed earrings or large hoops as they may make the chin shape appear narrower and sharper.
The proportions of a diamond shape face are generally a narrow forehead and chin with wide cheekbones.
DO
Similar to heart shape faces, lean towards small to medium-sized hoops. Our Agonda extra small silver hoops are a nice choice to draw attention away from wider cheekbones and to elongate the face.
DON’T
Chunky earrings or earrings with a lot of volume at the top make a diamond face look wider than it is.
All in all…
Face shapes are one thing but it’s really all about the proportions of your face when it comes to earrings. Experimenting with necklines and hairstyles also assists in learning what works for you and your face shape.
Have fun, get creative and remember jewellery is all about self-expression - and there are no limitations on that. So whatever you discover about your face shape, it’s just a rough guide on what earrings may flatter your face shape, not a rule. You make the style rules!
Which earrings work for your face shape? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
Join us as we discuss what we do, how we do it and what makes us different to the other jewellers in the market…
We are proud to be Brighton Lane Jewellers in a community that encourages and fosters local independent businesses. Brighton had to be the place to open our first shop with its unwavering support of entrepreneurs and creativity - plus our founder, Stacey already lived there!
We support and visit our neighbours in Duke’s Lane regularly and join in with community events, after all, small businesses need to help each other out.
Our handmade jewellery isn’t necessarily trend-driven. Our collections are timeless in their designs and have been made for everyday wear, special occasions and sentimental gifts.
You won’t see our pieces being made using premade parts or machinery. And there isn’t a factory in sight. Every piece is handmade by our lovely artisans whom we have a great relationship with. They use handheld tools and age-old techniques passed down from generation to generation.
Only experience tells the artisan how long to spend on a piece to achieve the level of detail they need rather than a pressurised factory quota. It’s a beautiful thing to see just what the human hand can do through dedication to a craft.
The result? Our customers get carefully crafted pieces made from raw materials with a durability and quality that surpasses that of high street jewellery.
Our boho jewellery has the unique characteristic of being inspired by travel. Our founder has always taken inspiration from her travels and the designs for the jewellery are always based on places in the world like Halong Bay in Thailand.
Travel continues to be an integral theme in Aquila Jewellery today and a big differentiating factor in why our jewellery is unique. Not only does each piece come with a special handmade design but it carries a sentimental story and an ode to the world around us.
This is why so many of our customers buy for themselves but also give our jewellery as thoughtful gifts.
The planet is full of amazing places to visit and behold - and small details to appreciate. Like a humble Indonesian ceramic in a yoga class that resulted in the Ubud silver detailed pendant!
We have fostered such a great relationship with our artisans over the years, travelling to see them in India, Thailand and Indonesia in person.
We know them by name, speak with them regularly and know for a fact their working conditions and pay are of an excellent standard.
Our artisans draw from their cultural legacies in India, Thailand and Indonesia to create beautifully boho jewellery. For example Jawan, the technique that inspired the founding of Aquila Jewellery features prominently in our collections.
This technique is where thin threads of metal and tiny metal beads e.g sterling silver, are placed on flat piece of jewellery and arranged in an ornate and often symmetrical fashion. The base metal is oxidised to create a contrast in the design.
Additionally, we have pieces displaying fine filigree, hand-hammered, and dot work. You can learn more about our jewellery types and techniques here.
It’s pretty amazing that we have customers all over the world due to our online store.
But not only that, the customers that buy from our shop are of all ages and all genders. Our jewellery is made for everyone and inclusive of everyone.
We aren’t part of a chain. We don’t have a head office - or even an office! We are just an independent business built from a love of handmade boho jewellery and travel.
By supporting small businesses customers are investing in a new point of view and a passion you won’t find from a chain. Customers choosing to shop independent are using their money to encourage independent creativity and a small, intimate customer experience.
We are pleased to say we have many repeat customers who pop into the shop just to say hello and have a catch up. To us, this is the beauty of independent businesses.
All of our silver pieces are made from recycled silver. Nothing is wasted. There are no extra extraction processes and no additional energy and co2 created through mining and transportation. Just recycled silver, melted down and remade by our artisans in their workshops.
We are also aiming to be a fully recycled metal jewellery within the coming year. We’ll be hitting 80% recycled metals this June, so we are nearly there!
We have developed our packaging so it is fully recyclable with uncoated craft boxes and organic cotton bags.
We are very aware as a business that borrows from the earth that we need to tread carefully on it.
Quality metal is very important to us. We want our customers to be able to enjoy their pieces time and time again (upkeep and maintenance help by the way).
Our silver pieces are 925 sterling silver which means 92.5 parts out of 100 are solid silver and the other 7.5 are made from copper - a specifically chosen hypoallergenic alloy metal that won’t irritate sensitive skin.
Sterling silver is durable, strong and with some cleaning every now and again maintains its lustre perfectly. You won’t find any fake silver from Aquila Jewellery!
Our gold pieces are primarily made from 925 sterling silver and have a gold vermeil 2.5 micron coating on them, a five-times thicker coating than gold plated jewellery.
For our solid gold ring, we use 9ct gold and 18ct gold on our mixed metal rings.
All of our pieces have an official hallmark, a necessary stamp to verify the piece’s purity.
We want our customers to love their jewellery. But we do understand sometimes they may request a refund or an exchange. We are happy to do so with pieces in their original packaging and in the same condition you received them in.
Unfortunately for hygiene reasons, we cannot accept earrings for returns or refunds - we are sure you understand why.
If you find there is a defect with your piece we can refund or exchange up to 6 months after placing your order, within reason, and we’ll have a quick check of the item to understand the problem.
Every piece in our range has been deliberately designed using quality metals in certain designs and quantities. The result is jewellery that doesn’t break the bank.
We often have sales and by signing up to our newsletter you can get exclusive offers and hear about big discounts first.
We are a small business that cares. We care about our artisans, the finished product and our customers. We wouldn’t be anything without them!
Thank you for taking an interest in our story and we hope you pop in to see us in our shop or take a look at our online shop soon to find beautiful pieces as unique as you.

Join Aquila Jewellery as we explore this unique place and discover how its vibrant nature has influenced our jewellery designs.
On the outside, the park is a paradise of dazzling coral reefs, thriving mangrove forests, sun-drenched beaches and colourful animals. On the inside, diverse ecosystems support and preserve the park in a powerful motion of nature.
Spanning nearly 600 square miles, this marine park is home to a diverse range of marine and terrestrial species. king cobras, giant squirrels and flying foxes are just some of the sightings visitors might spot.
Famous for its 110 bird species as well as 32 marine species such as zebra sharks, yellowtail barracudas and red lionfish, the park is also home to rare animals many of which are critically endangered and on the IUCN Red List. These include leatherback turtles, dugongs (similar to manatees), greater mouse deer, nicobar pigeons and the back finless porpoises.
Alive with ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangrove forests and natural features like waterfalls, caves and beaches, Tarutao national park is one of Thailand’s most revered ecological locations; the ideal destination to inspire jewellery like our Tarutao silver ring.
It’s also a sister location to Palawan, another Thailand-inspired collection.
Archaeological evidence suggests the islands within the park may have had human inhabitants as far back as 4,000 years ago. The Chao Leh people, or ‘Sea Gypsies’ are thought to be the first inhabitants, and they remain in the area to this day.
The early 20th century saw Tarutao island used as a penal colony accommodating 3,000 political prisoners and common criminals until it closed in 1948. After the islands were uninhabited for some time, fishermen and farmers began living there.
In 1974, Tarutao National Marine Park was established by the Royal Forest National Park Department, making it one of Thailand’s largest parks. In 1982 it was listed as an ASEAN Heritage Park in recognition of its biodiversity.
The love affair between Thailand and its jewellery started all the way back in the 13th century. It was mostly worn by wealthy people and was made from precious stones and local precious metals such as gold and silver. Rich and noble families wore beautifully ornate gold necklaces and gem-studded silver bracelets as well as more intricate precious stone pieces.
Jewellery from this country has always had a close link to the hill tribes that live there. Most notable are the Karen Tribes who create unique motifs and designs with locally sourced silver.
Over the next 400 years, the jewellery industry grew in size, creativity and influence, relying on mostly gold and silver metals.
By the mid-20th century after the implementation of new technologies and techniques, Thailand’s government began to invest in the industry, train their native people and create the successful industry that now thrives.
Today, the country is one of the world’s leading producers of fine jewellery. Thai silver jewellery is famed for its high quality of at least 95% purity.
Getting around Tarutao park isn’t a problem as there are plenty of options. It all depends on what kind of views you want and how active you want to be.
For those who love hiking, the park presents several trails which can be explored alone or with a guide. There are mountain bikes available to rent at Mo Lae Bay amongst other places. It is a fantastic way to soak up all the sights and beauty of the park without leaving a trace.
If you’d like to travel by sea, boat tours and long-tail boat hire gives you unique access to the archipelago. Renting a kayak presents a brilliant opportunity to explore the coasts and mangroves.
For tired legs, there are shuttle taxis that operate across Tarutao island that can be booked for roughly 300 Baht.
Tarutao park offers endless ways to have beautiful experiences with nature. You can visit for the day or spend a few days in the park, staying in any of the bungalows or campsites located within it. It is worth noting that the park is closed from May to October, the rainy season.
To access the beaches at Tarutao National Marine Park you’ll need to first arrive at Koh Tarutao and then take a long-tail boat or kayak to your desired beach. Some of the most popular are Ao Phante Malaka, Ao Talo Udang and Ao Son. Expect untouched, quiet beaches and undisturbed wildlife.
The park has many caves and geologically interesting locations. A popular cave is Bat Cave on Adang Island.
If snorkelling or scuba diving is your thing, the coral reefs in the park are bustling with colour and marine life. Popular locations are Koh Lek, Koh Sarai and Hin Ngam.
Refresh yourself and take in the beauty of some of the many waterfalls in the area. Visitors often take a trip to see Lu Du Waterfall, situated near the HQ. This multi-tiered waterfall has a series of pools that you can swim in.
Alternatively, the Mai Tai Waterfall in the north of the park is great for having a picnic and a dip in the cool waters.
Our founder Stacey loved every second of visiting the Tarutao National Marine Park. She visited Koh Lipe and Koh Ra Wi via boat and was amazed by how perfectly untouched the beaches were, something which can be hard to find these days!
The crystal clear waters were teeming with marine life and vivid coral reef. She spotted some zebra sharks and witnessed the denseness of the mangroves.
The Tarutao collection carries the spirit of Tarutao park in its form, with the ‘cut out’ design representing the dynamic systems of nature at play in this incredible destination.
Would you like to visit Tarutao park? What would you do there? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below
]]>Whilst emeralds, pearls and crystals are in, you can breathe a sigh of relief that many other 2023 spring jewellery trends include more accessible precious metal pieces at affordable prices.
So what are this spring’s jewellery trends and how do you wear them?
Let’s take a look.
Cuffs are huge this spring; namely arm cuffs according to elle.
The chunkier the better, this 90s look has made a surprise return to be one of the biggest jewellery trends for spring.
Cuffs carry an effortless and freshness into spring due to their associations with a casual boho warm weather style, not to mention the fact that they are incredibly simple to put on and wear.
Shine in spring with a gorgeously glowing gold bracelet cuff like this one. Size adjustable and perfects for wrists and biceps it’s a versatile cuff that doesn’t break the bank.
Cuffs are being worn with just about everything. Shirts, t-shirts, and dresses are top picks to highlight this look and all kinds of precious metals and man made cuffs hit the mark too.
Dramatic earrings are certainly a spring favourite this year and one of the top 5 jewellery trends in 2023.
Add to that the enduring trend of earring stacks and ear cuffs and you’ve already got yourself a party from the ears up.
As recommended by Harpers Baazar, drop earrings are perfect for completing your spring weather look, adding some drama to an everyday outfit or glam to a night out.
Rather than multiple pieces, drop earrings provide a single easy go-to for dressing up an outfit.
Go big with these handmade feather drop earrings in 14k gold vermeil - the perfect golden hue to suit all skin tones. Ideal for movement and setting off your spring wardrobe.
For earrings stacks, subtle and simple always works. Try these 925 sterling silver sleeper hoops and accessorise with stacked huggies up the ear.
Or why not bring glowing gold to your spring look with a chunky ear cuff? Ideal for when you opt for your hair up. Pair with a matching arm cuff for an additional look.
The type of drop earrings you love are up to you! Gold brings a certain warmth to spring and silver brings a cool lustre.
Drop earrings look great with high neck items and dark colours for contrast. Huggie hoops and ear stacks easily translate from day to night so are a useful option instead when getting ready time is short.
For maximum impact pair long drop earrings and a full ear stack.
Silver lovers rejoice - chunky silver jewellery is in, in a big way. It’s a popular metal all year round as it retains a delicacy and subtly whilst also being a flattering metal for all skin tones. And in spring it displays an icy shine to compliment your outfit.
A piece that doesn’t break the bank but does ooze with quality is this 925 sterling silver cuff. Just the piece to wear stacked with other bracelets and cuffs and beautifully timeless.
For a chunky look that also ticks the minimal box, try this chunky hammered ring. Wear alone or with a silver cuff to match.
It’s up to you! Try layering silver necklaces for volume and stacking silver bracelets and cuffs for texture. Slouchy jumpers and loose fit knits set off chunky silver jewellery nicely as do dark outfits and monochrome looks.
Why not tie in both trends with abstract chunky silver jewellery?
Personalised jewellery has been popular for a while now and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Whether it’s pendants shaped in a letter of the alphabet or engraved on the back, personalised jewellery is a strong spring trend.
Jewellery with an unfinished crafty edge is big this season, and personalisation fits the bill nicely.
Aquila Jewellery offers engraving in our shop. So whether it’s a special date, important initials or anything and everything else, our engraving service is something to consider. All you need to do is present us with an Aquila Jewellery item that has a flat side.

This year, not only are jewellery trends changing but customer trends are too. In 2023 jewellery lovers don’t just want beautiful jewellery they want authenticity. They also care about the materials being used and the supply chain.
Welcome to jewellery trends in 2023. The year where both jewellery trends and the industry itself are changing.
We’re happy to say that handmade jewellery will be a strong jewellery trend this year according to style bible Vogue.
Customers are becoming more and more invested in pieces that have been lovingly laboured over by skilled artisans. They are appreciating the uniqueness that comes with jewellery that hasn’t been factory made and distributed en masse.
Each piece of handmade jewellery comes with a timeless quality, a story, and a sentimentality that high street jewellery simply doesn’t. Cue customers searching for statement pieces with an artisanal stamp and a quality that endures.
We never miss an opportunity to celebrate handmade jewellery in all its glory. Our travel-inspired jewellery range is a testament to what can happen when hand held tools, expert artisans and generational techniques come together.
That’s right, chunky gold pieces are one of the hottest top 5 jewellery trends in 2023. But before you start fretting over how you are going to afford this look on a budget, consider getting creative with your approach.
Swap some jewellery pieces with a friend for some fresh looks. Head to charity shops, vintage stalls and second-hand marketplaces.
Layer multiple necklaces you already own to create the illusion of one thick one. Stack rings on one finger for maximum impact, or find unique and affordable handmade gold pieces that will shine for longer than just a trend.
Do chunky your way!
Highlighted by Elle as a 2023 trend to watch, the little finger ring is making a strong comeback this year - and we’re not talking signet rings.
Did you know that in the Victorian era women who wore pinky rings used them as a symbol of their intention not to marry? And, during the Suffragettes movement in the early 20th century, women also wore such rings as a declaration of self-worth and self-love?
So for women, the return of the pinky ring in 2023 could mean more than just trends. Silver and gold are in for pinky rings so why not try a subtle band like our skinny Agonda ring for a new look?
We’re talking about long earrings that bring movement and life to a look.
A neat up-do hairstyle plus large gold or silver hoops or dangle earrings will hit the mark. One thing is certain, you can’t go too big!
Another way to wear your earrings is to mismatch them. That means different earrings in each ear.
Alternatively, you can wear a plain stud in one ear and a large earring in the opposite ear and enjoy playing with an asymmetric look.
It’s the playful maximalism of the 80s (leg warmers are up to you).
Silver is a versatile choice for jewellery as it can as easily cover an everyday minimalist look as it can a futuristic runway one. It can be mixed with other precious metals as an earthy contrast yet has more than enough lustre to be worn alone.
So, for a jewellery trend that shines in 2023, choose anything from subtle to statement pieces. Ready-to-wear looks are also in, with silver huggies, skinny silver bands and bracelets also keeping the trend looking fresh.
Don’t forget to look out for brands like Aquila Jewellery who use recycled silver to make their silver pieces. Choosing recycled silver has a huge impact on the environment from saving animal and plant lives to reducing CO2 emissions, toxic waste and energy.
It also means customers have the power to shape the industry in more ways than one.
It’s fair to say the jewellery trends of 2023 are as much physical as they are social. Experimenting with size, textures, metals and placement will bring some of the latest looks into your everyday jewellery; leaving more than enough room for you to exert your own take on these trends.
Which trend is your favourite? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
Here’s why you should…
We’ve all got a faithful LBD somewhere in our wardrobe and party season is the perfect time to bring it back out. Whether long-sleeved or sleeveless a little black dress offers the perfect solid colour contrast against festive necklaces.
Alternatively, a more intricate pendant with mixed metals could be a nice way to style a simple dress. The 925 sterling silver and 14ct gold vermeil Palawan Pendant brings all the ornate glory of a snowflake with the eye-catching gleam of a golden bauble.
For a festive boho look that flatters and elongates your decolletage, try layering your necklaces as recommended by Ourculturemag. It’s a versatile way of mixing old and new jewellery and creating texture to your overall look.
Tip: Higher types of necklines like jewel, halter, bateau and high neck are the best choice when it comes to a little black dress that covers your decolletage, thus enhancing the impact of your chain and pendant.
Let’s be honest, Christmas jumpers are all reds, golds, greens, patterns and embellishments, so chances are your necklace and/or bracelet might get lost in a sea of festive fabric.
Elegant, fun and just that little bit dressy, dangle earrings are a wonderful festive jewellery choice, particularly when they look like the Trio Drop Agonda Earrings.
These 925 sterling silver earrings are hand hammered by expert artisans to create little indentations all over the metal. When the light catches them they shimmer beautifully, Also available in glowing gold.
Alternatively the lovely Mandalay Mixed Metal Drop Earrings add even more fine craftsmanship to your festive jewellery look.
These earrings include polished gold and silver for a sparkly, light reflective look and intricate Jawan dot work with oxidised silver background for maximum contrast of textures.
Drop earrings bring some movement to your outfit too. Don’t forget to give them a quick clean regularly to keep them looking shiny for many more parties.
Tip: Wearing your hair up is the best way to show off drop earrings. It doesn’t need to be a finely coiffed ‘do, just a simple top knot allows the earrings to do their thing.
If you are someone who likes to keep things minimal, your party season styling will probably be pared back and refined.
Cue mix and match pieces from the popular Agonda collection which comes in 925 sterling silver and 14ct gold vermeil. With its hand hammered texture and simple design, it’s a collection where you can wear one, two or three pieces alongside your party outfit.
Tip: For a truly minimal take, stick to one precious metal to highlight its beauty. Go for gold or silver as your main precious metal focus.
It may be sequins, glitter or both in this year's party season styling. Sparkly clothes always catch the eye so it may be that you are someone who enjoys statement jewellery too.
If that’s the case, why not go all in with some unique ring shapes and designs?
Perhaps something like the Eliya mixed metal ring might light up your party.
Tip: Stick to one statement ring on each hand so that each piece can have the space to shine.
Got a loud outfit and want some jewellery to tone it down? Try some hand-hammered bangles and bracelets on for size.
This thin gold 14ct vermeil bracelet is a great choice for party season. It has a unique irregular shape, displaying a look you won't see on any other party goer.
Also available in silver!
Tip: These are best worn with sleeveless tops and dresses for a little festive low-key glam, though can be worn over long sleeves.
From pretty pendants to festive drop earrings, minimal pieces and beyond, we hope you’ve found some party season jewellery tips to help you style your party looks, your way.

Whether you’re a last minute gift buyer or an in-advance prepper, our Aquila Jewellery gift edit will give you all the handmade jewellery gift ideas you need to ensure your loved ones (and perhaps yourself) will have meaningful and long lasting gifts this year.
Choosing handmade is exactly that - a choice. You are choosing all the dedicated hours and detailed craftsmanship that goes into each piece. You are choosing techniques passed down generations and the marking of traditional hand held tools without a factory or high street in sight.
You’re also choosing uniqueness, timelessness, enduring quality and the romance that the time-honed art of handmade jewellery making results in pieces with a legacy, not just a price tag.
After all, with so many single-use, plastic gifts out there, why not choose something made from natural materials (and the majority of that recycled) that will last much more than just one Christmas?
We are an independent travel-inspired jewellery brand that sell carefully curated, handmade gold, silver and mixed metal jewellery pieces designed in Brighton and made by our trusted artisans in Indonesia and India.
Join us in our journey to discover beautiful and unique places in the world that inspire our jewellery collection. And as we seek sustainable ways to better our processes - we’re keen to learn to be better and do better.
For those that adore handmade jewellery with a twist, our 14ct gold vermeil feather drop earrings could be the ones! They’ve proven to be very popular since their release and bring a gorgeously gold glow to your Christmas wardrobe.
The shape and detailing has been designed to match the feather plumes of ostriches, which run wild across the expansive plains of the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya, Africa.
A place of huge ecological importance and home to the Great Migration, the vast and arid beauty of the Maasai Mara is a fitting inspiration for our earrings; ideal for anyone who adores the wonders of nature.
What would a jewellery gift edit be without a show stopper? An eye catching boho piece with a design so intricate it’s hard to believe it is made by hand?
Take a look at the finely crafted Mandalay ring. A mixed metal saddle ring made from 925 sterling silver and 18ct solid gold that displays careful dot work by our Indonesian artisans.
The small dot work and larger circle shapes draw inspiration from the spiritual significance of the circle or ‘Mandala’. Mandala’s are generally linked to the cosmos and deities and carry a symmetrical quality.
The name of the ring comes from the richly spiritual city of Mandalay, central Myanmar, a place steeped in royal history and grand architecture.
The choice for chunky ring lovers who look for unique boho designs.
Everything from our Agonda collection is the perfect choice for minimalists.
Each piece is created in a simple shape with no design or technique other than the hand-hammering of the 925 sterling silver or 14ct gold vermeil precious metals.
This makes for handmade jewellery that is beautifully subtle on its own, or perfect for stacking.
What is great about the Agonda collection too, as inspired by the idyllic sands of Agonda beach in Goa, India, is that its clean and refined design makes it popular to most tastes.
Looking for jewellery gifts for her? Try our silver dangle dots or how about some cute little Agonda round studs? Perfect for everyday wear.
The wow factor comes in many different forms. From the fact that this ring is made from 9ct solid gold to the fact that you can wash your hands whilst wearing it, this versatile Agonda skinny ring is ideal for stacking or wearing on your chosen finger (pinky is popular).
For those that love high quality fuss-free jewellery, it’s at the top of the Christmas list!
OK so they’re too special to be crammed alongside satsumas but they are the perfect size to fit in a Christmas stocking.
We’re talking about easy-to-wear, lightweight huggies, like our 14ct gold vermeil Tanna huggies.
Just the jewellery choice for busy people who want simple and classic everyday earrings that won’t fall out. They are a real winner if you’re looking for a clean, effortless look.
From statement rings to skinny rings and drop earrings to huggies, we hope we have inspired your Christmas jewellery gifting this year to be as special as the person you are buying it for.

With this journey comes learning about the driving forces behind sustainability in the jewellery industry, like the world renowned Responsible Jewellery Council.
Join us as we discover who the RJC are, what they do and how Aquila Jewellery is learning from their expertise.
Sustainability is a big project for us in 2023 and we’ll be keeping you updated on all the changes we make. The biggest reveal is that we will be looking to work more closely with skilled artisans recognised by the RJC in the near future (which means another little trip for our founder in the new year!).
But first let’s get into finding out more about the RJC.
Formed in 2005, the Responsible Jewellery Council is a globally recognised organisation and standards body focusing on the production of responsible jewellery, throughout the entire supply chain.
From precious metal miners to jewellery sellers, it unites companies in their mission to provide responsible, sustainable business without harming people or the planet.
The standards set by the RJC enable each company to apply responsible business practices into their daily operations and management systems with a focus on responsible supply chains and business ethics.
They have created a number of standards for which they stand.
In order to become a member, prospective members must be audited to ensure ongoing compliance with the RJC’s standards.
The result? Through independent assessment, scientific advancements and innovations, members can make responsible decisions resulting in better outcomes for the environment and the humans who live within it.
For the humans, plants and animals involved in the jewellery and watch making supply chain it means that sustainability and human rights are at the forefront of all operations.
Be it fair wages and working conditions as well as ethical precious metal mining practices and protecting wildlife, the RJC standards and practices always ensure regulations align with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Due Diligence Guidance and the UN Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights.
With so many variables, reliably measuring sustainability and other long term goals is a huge challenge.
However, the RJC has MEL, a monitoring, evaluation and learning programme that studies the impact the organisation has.
MEL is divided into four parts:
This is an official statement of what short term and medium impacts RJC intend to make, the strategies they intend on using and how well these things are achieved, over time. The Roadmap is being created for the decade, with an emphasis on the five pillars of sustainability development: People, Plant, Prosperity, Peace and Partnerships.
There is regular data collection from members. This data is tracked and analysed so that conclusions can be drawn regards to progress in the above Roadmap.
The RJC undertakes an in depth analysis of the areas of the supply chain covered by their standards and draws conclusion about progress in the Roadmap.
The performance monitoring results are reported on internally and externally in order to be able to best inform RJC’s approaches, effectiveness and impacts.
RJC write a yearly Progress Report to summarise the work of the RJC from impact to changes moving forward.
We’ve made quite a few changes since we started in 2019. As we’ve grown from humble online Etsy store to fully fledged shop in Brighton, we’ve also learnt how to make some sustainable changes to our materials, which in turn makes a big difference to the planet.
We've been using recycled sterling silver from our end of lines, faulty pieces, samples and surplus pieces for several years. We also purchase recycled silver and work with it too. This small pledge makes a huge impact.
From saving animal and plant lives, ecosystems and beyond to reducing toxic waste and energy and C02 emissions, the recycling of sterling silver makes a huge impact on plant, animal and human life.
Our packaging is plastic free and fully recyclable (it also happens to be rather lovely looking).
We use organic cotton bags or uncoated kraft boxes with a pouch in neutral tones.
As a jewellery brand which is travel and nature inspired, it is only right that we work with a supplier who is a member of the RJC list. That way, we and our customers can be confident in knowing our jewellery is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the out.
Truth be told, it’s complex and challenging making truly eco-friendly jewellery. But we’re determined to keep making small changes for the planet around us.
Join us for more updates soon!

The island is famed for its unparalleled natural beauty and diverse geological landscapes which often finds it voted high among the world’s most idyllic islands to visit.
Palawan is essentially divided in two, geologically. One half is desert and the other is filled with ecological features like dense forests with tropical flowers, fauna and waterfalls. There are also pristine beaches (the inspiration for Alex Garland’s The Beach nonetheless) with towering limestone cliffs and many types of fish, coral, birds and even endangered turtles.
It is the intrepid explorer’s paradise and the inspiration for The Palawan Collection.
How the name ‘Palawan’ came about is much debated. One theory is that it may come from ‘Paragua’ (Spanish for umbrella), as the island is shaped as such. Another could be the Indian word for territory ‘Palawans’.
Early settlers on Palawan were indigenous people such as the Tabganuas and Palaw’ans ethnic groups; descendants of which inhabit the island today.
In the 1960s a team of researchers led by anthropologist and historian Robert B. Fox found evidence of humans dating back more than 50,000 years in the Tabon Caves, putting Palawan at the very inception of the Philippines itself.
Unfortunately, Palawan’s recent history has been tumultuous, filled with war, colonisation and different reigning eras that have evolved the architecture, culture and even names of locations over the years. But today’s Palawan is a liberated and an island of peace, awash with friendly locals and enamoured visitors.
Head to the island’s capital Puerto Princesa for the best shopping on the island.
With everything from native crafts and arts to local delicacies, shopping in Palawan is a popular pastime and therefore highly catered for. Cue large shopping malls, local markets and shops providing everything you could want.
Head down to ASIANO Arts and Crafts in Puerto Princesa and find beautiful handmade masks, bowls, wall hangings, abaca baskets, sculptures and unique jewellery pieces.
Many of the items in this shop are made by the indigenous people of Palawan —ask Jojo the shop owner for the full stories.
For boho jewellery with a local twist, go to Palawan Authenticity South Sea Pearl Shop in Puerto Princesa which sells all kinds of pearl adjourned jewellery in a range of colours and sizes fresh off the boats.
Coated cashew nuts are a delicious snack in Palawan that are offered in many shops and markets. You can enjoy lots of different coatings including sweet honey and caramelized brown sugar, a local speciality.
There is so much to do in Palawan, it’s hard to fit it all in. But let’s just say your trip is covered for nature enthusiasts, beach dwellers and adrenaline junkies.
Head up to Estrella Falls in southern Palawan, a unique rainforest area with scattered waterfalls. Trekkers can scale the peaks and those who want a cleansing swim can take a dip in the emerald-green waters. BBQ area and tables are around the site.
Even though the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park or ‘Underground River’ is always popular with tourists, it never takes away from its incredible, unmatched beauty.
Listed as the UNESCO WORLD Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, this area includes intricate cave systems, an underground river (which you can have tours of) and ecosystems that span from cliff top to sea bed.
Located on the western side of Palawan it also boasts a flawless beach experience where photos don’t do it justice.
On Palwan’s northernmost tip is El Nido and its 45 islands and islets. Those that go to El Nido often island hop with each island offering its own experience; like surfing, snorkelling, kitesurfing and scuba diving or lounging on the unspoilt beaches of Nacban Beach and Las Cabanas Beach.
It's also an area with steep cliffs so rock climbing is a popular pursuit and some like to cliff jump. There are plenty of easily accessible organised tours help you discover the local wildlife and nature via boat or on foot.
Palawan inspired the Palawan Collection, a mixed metal jewellery collection part of the wider Aquila Jewellery range made with 925 sterling silver and 14ct gold vermeil by our Indonesian artisans.
Each piece of this handmade jewellery collection has been made using handheld tools and encapsulates the contrast of desert and jungle on the Island of Palawan with its contrast of metals.
Have you visited Palawan or would you like to? Let us know in the comments below.
]]>And with that new wardrobe comes more skin on show and a prime opportunity to experiment with your secret warm weather style weapon – summer time jewellery.
Summer time is a time of year where we can really experiment and express ourselves through not only our clothes but our jewellery choices too. And what better way to show our unique tastes than with unique handmade jewellery, with a story.
Let’s take a look at some popular summer time jewellery choices that always bring feel-good, sunny vibes.
Chunky statement rings stand out as a fun summer choice as our arms and hands are often out and uncovered in the warmer summer temperatures. As a result, jewellery can take centre stage.
Statement pieces are useful for those who don’t want to be draped in too much jewellery. Choosing some larger statement rings act as a complete jewellery look – after all no one wants fussy, complicated jewellery when they are out enjoying hot weather.
A handmade ring with unique detailing made from high quality precious metals is a good option because it is built to last. With some regular upkeep and maintenance it will last many, many more summers and holidays to come.
Meet our Mandalay mixed metal saddle ring which displays golden 14ct gold vermeil metal and the lustre of polished 925 sterling silver. It’s the ideal addition to a boho summer look.
Not only that, it’s so unique to look at you can guarantee you won’t bump into anyone wearing the same – even on holiday.
The beauty of handmade rings by skilled artisans such as ours in India and Indonesia is the story you inherit through the design and craftsmanship.
With techniques passed down through generations and designs symbolic of their native culture and trades, handmade statement rings can bring real inspiration for travel and exploration into your summer jewellery collection.
It’s a look many go to for their summer time jewellery. Two or three pendants or necklaces of varying lengths worn on bare skin or over a T shirt giving the illusion of one necklace with several cord lengths and pendant charms in its design.
Precious metal layered necklaces bring a reflective, glowing quality to your look, just what summer time jewellery needs.
Remember if you’re planning on swimming, remove all your jewellery so there is no chance of any chemical reactions from your metal jewellery when it comes into contact with moisture - no one wants a green mark on their skin when they take their jewellery off!
Warm weather usually brings about lightweight bangles of different metals, beaded and fabric bracelets in a spectrum of colours.
But cuff bracelets always offer more comfort in hot conditions when we may find our extremities expand a little in the heat as they are adjustable to fit and have some give.
Go rustic with mixed metal, glow with gold or shine with silver. Our bracelet selection offers not only stackable, minimal bracelets but more ornate options that can be worn on their own, as a statement piece.
Huggies are a great option for summer time jewellery and holidays. They are versatile, practical due to their size, easy to put (and keep in) due to their hinged back closure, and they can culminate in a beautifully boho stacked look in other piercings up the ear.
If you’re planning on traveling or going on holiday in the summer, huggies are also a great go to. They fit snugly and comfortably to the ear so if you do find yourself forgetting to take them off at night, it isn’t the end of the world.
Often, people wear huggies due to their subtle appearance, making them ideal summer and holiday accessories for a night out or a day on the beach. With everyone tending to wear brighter colours, more prints and more daring cuts in hotter weather, having some minimal jewellery can be a nice pairing to offset your overall look.
Our huggies collection come in both 14ct gold vermeil and 925 sterling silver are an example of unique, handmade earrings that stand out all summer long, despite their size.
Take the Mazunte silver V point huggies. These may be small but their design and shape make for a big impact. These are popular because of their quirky appearance, lightweight form and effortless wearability.
Anklets are a nice decorative way to embrace summer time jewellery in a rarely shown place. Make the most of shorts, skirts, cropped trousers and whatever else you wear in warm weather and accessorise your ankles – gold and silver anklets look gorgeous with a tan.
Summertime and holidays are the perfect time to dig out your statement pieces you had hidden away and give them centre stage. It’s also a great time to introduce the layering of your necklaces to bring more length and depth to a summer outfit.
Don’t forget, summertime is about feeling free and light - go for comfy huggies and bracelet cuffs that have a little give, the last thing you or your body wants is to feel restricted.
Go on, have fun pairing jewellery and your warm weather look to suit your individual style!

]]>Get inspired with some festival jewellery styles that can make your outfit pop day or night with our festival jewellery guide.
It’s the oldest boho festival jewellery trick in the book, and that’s because it works. Layering your jewellery is the easiest way to get that effortless boho look where jewellery takes centre stage.
A popular approach is wearing layered pendants, one short in length and one long in length. They don’t need to be matching in style, anything goes!
This look accessorises the decolletage. It works on any kind of neckline - open neck or high neck too. If you are wearing a plain colour, the pendants will add a contrast of shape, texture and tone.
For example, our handmade small Agonda silver pendant can be worn layered with its larger version for the perfect layered pairing. Ideal summer pieces that always catch the sun.
Tired of samey high street styles?
Handmade festival jewellery carries a uniqueness and a story within it that adds character and depth to your outfit in a way that factory-made jewellery just can’t.
Shopping handmade helps you find one of a kind jewellery that has been made by skilled artisans all over the world using age-old techniques. That means the quality and craftsmanship are high and there is no risk of bumping into anyone with the same jewellery.
We opt for high quality 925 sterling silver or 9ct gold vermeil jewellery that will survive many festivals, not just one. It’s investing in your festival jewellery styles in a different, and often more ethical way.
When it comes to festivals and stacking the answer is always yes. Breath new life into your festival look with handmade boho pieces that bounce off each other whether on your wrist, ears, hands or toes.
Not only a festival must, stacked bracelets, or bangles as they are usually called create that easy, free movement on the body that matches the festival spirit.
And fyi all our bracelets are adjustable to size because we know our customers aren’t one size fits all.
For example our Agonda gold hammered bracelets layered up the wrist with a tan will really set off your look as well as reflect those rays.
This boho look is a classic when it comes to festival chic. Our interpretation offers a mixture of skinny, chunky, textured, polished, statement or subtle looks for your hands.
It’s really down to personal taste as to which rings should be worn but we find statement rings on the thumbs and skinnies on the little fingers are a great start. Check out our stacking rings for inspiration.
No festival jewellery guide would be complete without stacked earrings getting a mention. We’re talking huggies – the little hoop earrings that sit snug to your ear – all the way up your ears (read more on huggies).
Get experimental or minimal, but the beauty of huggies is that once they are in, you forget they are there!
It isn’t just hands that get to dressed up with festival jewellery, toes can to! If you’ve got some open toed shoes why not wear multiple rings on different toes across both feet for the ultimate boho traveller look?
Look like you’ve just stepped off the plane with our adjustable toe ring sets in 925 sterling silver, handmade in Indonesia. Festivals tend to get pretty hot, so the adjustable cuff-like feature really helps when your toes get hot and expand a little.
Change shoes for night time dancing and concentrating on another area to celebrate your boho festival jewellery.
When don’t hoops look good? Whether it’s big statement hoops, chunky small ones or huggies, hoops are a festival jewellery must. They are also very versatile and can work with nearly every outfit.
We have a wide range of hoops to mix and match with your festival wardrobe. For a textured, glowy gold look our 14ct gold vermeil creole hoop earrings are just the thing. And sterling silver hoops always bring the shine as a nice contrast.
Word of advice, stick to smaller hoops and huggies if you plan on dancing like a crazy person at night – no one wants to catch and pull them by accident! Save your statement hoops for day wear then switch them up at night.
A little goes a long way in the silver, gold and mixed metal jewellery world. Using tried and tested cleaning techniques alongside storing your pieces (ideally separately) in a dry jewellery box or fabric, closeable bags will help to keep tarnish and dirt at bay.
With so many festival jewellery looks to choose from you can wear some or all of them to suit your taste. You can mix your metals all day long, wear different jewellery for day and night and even wear toe rings with your day shoes and cover them up at night for a fresh and practical approach to festival jewellery.
Experiment and have fun!

The result is many of our new products display the traditional Indonesian jewellery-making techniques and designs so important to our roots, but also some very different and exciting pieces that expand our collections further across the globe.
It was important to Stacey not to lose sight of what Aquila is as a brand. Why it was made. And for who. To remember the pieces are travel-inspired, created by artisans with their own regionally native techniques.
And also to keep at Aquila’s core that each piece is uniquely sentimental, like an ode to the world around us. So, it was fitting to return to Indonesia, to take in the very culture that inspired Aquila itself and to sit down with our artisans face to face.
With the lush, tropical spread of nature, ornate architecture of temples, embellished local crafts and colourful sculptures, finding inspiration wasn’t difficult - it was knowing when to stop!
Thankfully, just the right amount of inspiration flowed and resulted in the beautiful handmade pieces that can now be yours.
Palawan is a mixed metal collection, handmade in Indonesia featuring many traditional jewellery making techniques such as jawan, oxidation and both dot and fine filigree work
The name Palawan comes from the geologically and ecologically diverse landscapes of Palawan island, Philippines. Formed of half desert and half jungles, mountains and beaches it is an island of breathtaking contrast that can only be found in nature.
This 925 sterling silver and 18ct gold vermeil claw bracelet is adjustable to size. Displaying dot work, fine filigree work and jawan techniques this handmade bracelet is a piece that has depth of craftsmanship.
It is ideal as a meaningful gold and silver bracelet gift.
This mixed metal bracelet is an incredibly detailed piece with such a level of fine craftsmanship that it is hard to believe it has been made by hand. The fine filigree and jawan work are beautifully ornate and filled with the contrast of textured 925 sterling silver and polished 18 ct gold vermeil.
Adjustable with its spring ring clasp and chain it can fit a variety of wrist sizes.
In our first introduction of tear drop earrings, you can see age-old silversmithing techniques, symmetrical design Indonesian jewellery is famed for and a beautiful contrast between the 9ct gold polished teardrop shape and the ‘cut out’ detail of the jawan work.
The Agonda collection has been with Aquila from the beginning. We now have a large array of choices from hammered gold rings to silver stacking rings, gold bracelets, and silver necklaces.
Also available in 925 sterling silver, this 9ct gold vermeil quadline ring is a new gold addition to the collection, handmade in India by our artisans.
Wear alone or alongside gold stacking rings across your hands for a unique boho look. Perfect for those that want a chunky ring without the clunk.
These 9ct gold trio drop earrings are a gorgeous addition to the Agonda collection. Carrying the standard hammering technique they reflect the light in their indented pockets, always reminding us of the sands of our favourite Goan beach.
We’ve gone all the way to Japan to name our latest bamboo inspired collection, which takes its name from the thick bamboo forest of Sagano, found outside of Kyoto city, Japan.
These 925 sterling silver hoops are hand-carved on both sides to represent the nodes of a bamboo culm and carry a quiet peacefulness in their simplistic design.
Another exciting new collection is Mazunte, named after Mazunte town, Mexico, a mixing pot of contemporary and historic boho culture.
Created by our skilled artisans in India, these 9ct gold vermeil v point huggies are the perfect addition to your quirky boho jewellery collection with their interesting shape and ridged texture.
As you can see we have many pieces which align with the traditional aesthetic of Aquila Jewellery. But we also have many new pieces including those you can find on our site or in store that tell new stories as we gather up fresh locations in the world to lust over.

]]>Let’s find out.
Fashioned using handheld tools, raw metals (sometimes other materials too) and without the aid of premade parts, handmade jewellery is created by jewellery artisans across the globe with their bare hands.
This type of artisan jewellery, made by hand and not a machine takes time to be made. No two pieces are identical, but rather they are all beautifully imperfect with tiny variations in each design.
Each country, district or tribe have their own unique jewellery-making techniques. Native groups often pass down techniques to the younger generations and a further mix of cultural, societal and historical trends help to shape the techniques jewellery artisans use today.
Wire jewellery is an ancient jewellery-making technique, dating back thousands of years. No heat is applied to the metal in this technique; it is simply performed by bending and wrapping the wire across and over.
Some designs are more ornate with weaves and scrolls and others are a simple wrap across. Options range from plated wire with a copper core and sterling silver to 9ct gold and copper.
This type of jewellery involves wood, plastic, glass or other type material beads with a hole in the centre which are strung on a thread or thin wire. The options are endless depending on your taste, from chunky materials like shells for a statement look or smaller, colourful resin beads for a more subtle pop of colour.
These precious metals are malleable (once silver has been combined with another metal to form an alloy) so are shaped into rings, necklaces, anklets, earrings and various other items by artisans.
Goldsmiths and silversmiths shape the metal by hammering, soldering, casting, cutting and welding amongst other methods.
Using fused glass – glass which has been fused together in the kiln at a hot temperature, this type of handmade jewellery is made using hand tools and a myriad of glass colours. Often shaped into statement pendants, bracelets, beads, charms and rings.
This certain type of clay solidifies once fired in a kiln and consists of tiny particles of metals like bronze, silver or gold that have been mixed with water and an organic binder.
Jewellery makers mould and shape the clay with tools by hand then fire it in the kiln, solidifying the clay. During the heating process the size of the piece reduces by up to a third of the size.
The material left after the heating process is a pure version of whatever precious metal particles are within the mixture. If you used silver metal clay you will be left with an item that is 99.9% pure silver after.
Aquila jewellery specialise in handmade jewellery made in India and Indonesia. We use only the best quality 925 sterling silver for our silver collection, 9ct gold vermeil for our gold pieces and 18ct gold and 925 sterling silver in our mixed metal items.
Our jewellery exists outside the timeline of fashion, instead aiming to celebrate the adventure of travel and the rawness of nature.
Handmade jewellery is valued for not only its craftsmanship but its longevity and the quality materials it is made from.
Supporting this unique jewellery industry helps independent brands and shops who bring fresh, new ideas into a saturated highstreet market where many pieces of jewellery look identical.
Much of the time, handmade jewellery is also ethical jewellery so is responsibly made, environmentally friendly and sometimes from recycled metals.
There are different types of handmade jewellery the world over, created by anything from indigenous tribes to city-based UK silversmiths.
What differs is not always the types of jewellery, but the specialist techniques they use in their native jewellery making processes.
Here are some commonly found specialist techniques below:
This process involves forming a raised design or texture on metal sheets (other materials are possible too). Debossing is the opposite, with the image being raised and the background being sunken. Both are done using hand tools.
This is a technique often found in Indian jewellery making and has a rich history dating back as far as the Romans. Enamel itself consists of a fused compound of base metal and powdered glass.
Silver or gold metals are coated with enamel which once hardened forms a smooth coating. Enamel can be made in any colour imaginable.
Our Hella pendant range exhibits the enamelling technique by our Indian artisans.
With its roots in ancient Greek and Italy, filigree is a delicate jewellery-making technique where tiny metal beads and thin threads of metal, for example sterling silver, are arranged on a flat piece of jewellery such as a ring to create ornate decorative designs often symmetrical in their appearance.
The base metal undergoes an oxidation process so that the shine and lustre of the filigree contrasts with that of the metal below.
It is a frequently used technique in Indonesia, particularly Bali, so much so that it has become synonymous with their jewellery culture. Our product (Agra ring) displays filigree at work by our skilled Indonesian artisans.
The Aquila Jewellery range also displays many other Indonesian silversmithing techniques in our collections.
Handmade jewellery carries individual traits from the artisans that make it as well as the country and culture it comes from. Next time you are in an independent handmade jewellery shop why not stop to take a close look at some pieces. Perhaps you can identify some techniques and even spot where it was made?

Let’s find out.
Huggie earrings take their name from their design. Most often they consist of small, metal hoops that ‘hug’ the ear, very close to the earlobe. They are also known as huggie hoop earrings.
Huggies are designed with two different back closures, lever or hinged back (latch) closings.
Wearers tend to put in one pair in their lobes for an understated, minimal look or stack them in various ear piercings up the ear for more of a layered boho look.
As discussed, huggies are a type of small hoop earring that hug closely to your earlobe.
Hoop earrings can be a variety of sizes but they never measure as close to the ear as huggies do. Hoops range as much in hoop diameter as they do in design. From big statement hoops like our extra large hammered hoops with a 6cm hoop diameter to ourextra small hammered hoops, with a 1.5cm hoop diameter, the distance from the earlobe is always greater than with huggie hoop earrings.Huggie hoop earrings also range in diameter but their range is much smaller. Some can be as small as 5mm, fitting totally flush against the skin. Our Tanna huggie hoops have a 10mm hoop diameter to ensure they are wearable for all of our customers.
This size also takes into consideration when certain parts of our body carry extra water or expand slightly when we’re hot and/or in a hot country.
Our coming-soon range of 925 sterling silver and 9k gold vermeil huggies will measure around 7-8mm so will fit neatly in the ear and be the ideal travel companion for no hassle earrings.
Huggie hoop earrings tend to have a lever or hinged back (latch) closing. They don’t have butterfly backs or screw backs as it is a little fiddly given their size. Huggies are all about putting them in and blissfully forgetting they are there.
Are huggie earrings and ear cuffs the same thing? No, for a few reasons.
Typically used in the ear lobe, huggies can also be used in the tragus (located in front of the ear canal), the helix (at the top of the ear) or in the forward helix (the top front part of the ear).
Like any precious metal piece of jewellery, a little bit of upkeep and cleaning along the way will make a big impact on each piece’s appearance – and life span.Take a look at our cleaning guide for sterling silver and gold earrings for quick, actionable advice.
Currently we have two sets of huggies in our Tanna collection (with more soon to come). First is the 925 sterling silver hoop huggies. These 925 sterling silver hoops are popular for that minimal, clean look (which pair particularly well with a tropical tan). They are also a fave of our founder Stacey who loves rocking them on her travels.
Next are our 9ct gold vermeil huggie hoops. Strong and simple to put in, you can sleep peacefully next time you’re on a beach knowing you won’t need to sift through the sand trying to fit your earring backs.
We're also pleased to show some of our new collections dropping in June - just in time for summer!

]]>Using long-established manual techniques and hand tools, staying loyal to the legacy of their ancestors, silversmithing in Indonesia is both an ancient cultural tradition and a rarely explored craft.
Join Aquila Jewellery as we explore these honed silver jewellery making techniques which have played a key role in many of our silver collections since the brand’s inception.
The historical origins of Indonesia date back some 40,000 years when the first people laid foot on the land. The country is composed of thousands of islands with Bali island as the place most associated with the production of silver jewellery.
Bali came about during its colonisation in 1293 by the Majapahit Empire of Java (1293 to 1520 AD). Kingdom ruler Hayam Wuruk, a leader with a huge amount of other territories to his name, brought over a plethora of artistic pursuits and Hindu-Javanese literature which helped inspire local art forms.
Over time, locals worked with precious metals using hand-held tools and learnt techniques together, passing down their learnt skills to children, close family, and neighbours - a method which still applies today according to this article from the Indonesian Cultural Heritage branch. Thus the handmade jewellery techniques stayed native to the villages in which they were born.
Indonesia was a country that traded with other countries over many centuries and there is no doubt that it saw contact with countless other cultures; therefore influencing the local artisans’ techniques, particularly during the Dutch colonial rule from 1602 and 300+ years onward.
And so a silversmithing heritage was developed over a large span of time, creating a generational bond and a cultural legacy.
The Balinese took inspiration from Indonesian mythology in the past, a supernatural world alive with animal characters and deities - both good and evil. It was commonly spoken among the people that deities visited locals to instruct them how to fashion gold and silver which made way for the silversmithing methods we know today, explains Insightbali.
This ‘gift’ from the Gods is honoured through using the traditional techniques in contemporary times. In turn, the jewellery the local artisans make is considered a ‘gift’ to the Gods that once taught them.
Silver jewellery carries a deep symbolic meaning entrenched in traditional religious ceremonies and rituals carried out by natives. According to this article, It can also be worn as a shrine to God and as a display of social status.
Balinese jewellery artisans find inspiration from the world around them too. From the beauty of symmetry and shapes found in nature, animal forms, Hindu architecture, and statues as well as the design of ancient armour, there is not just one piece of the rich Balinese culture that influences their jewellery creation, it is the culmination of trade, culture, religion and the passage of time.
To make a sterling silver handmade ring, Indonesian artisans follow the method below:
Here we can see an intricately crafted 925 sterling silver bar bracelet from InspiringJewelleryGB, made by artisans in Indonesia. The handmade decorative filigree and jawan work is a wonderful display of both skill and centuries-old techniques.
To see the work of Indonesian silversmiths in action take a look at these sterling silver oxidised globe dangle earrings with beautifully detailed filigree and jawan work on display from southpawstudios.
Let’s take a look at some of the Aquila Jewellery pieces that show clear examples of Indonesian jewellery making techniques.
Our statement 925 sterling silver and 18ct gold Kerala ring demonstrates the incredible skill of our artisans who have used fine filigree work in this piece. Notice the very careful soldering of delicate threads of metal as well as metal beads (filigree) in the design which form a beautiful symmetrical pattern.
The base metal of the ring is oxidised to create a differentiation of colour and texture to the filigree work.
When studying our open cuff 925 sterling silver Sydney bracelet, you can see how intricate spots of silver (Jawan) have created a unique texture in an almost engraved appearance in the design. Jawan is placed on the metal one spot at a time using glue to affix them in position.
A wave-like pattern is formed in a symmetrical way across the bracelet front. The back presents a polished plain back used to contrast against the decorative front.
This ancient technique sees artisans apply extremely refined specks of metal to the jewellery piece, to make a design. Usually placed on an oxidised or darker silver background, these tiny spheres of silver are polished to create further depth of appearance.
Granulation is similar to Jawan but the dots of silver are much smaller.
Our popular large mixed metal Agra studs display jawan work as well as granulation as the design showcases this intricate metalwork in concentric circles.
The contrast of 925 sterling silver beadwork and the polished 18k circle in the centre of the design highlights the differentiation between both the metal and the techniques used.
What a journey through Indonesia and Bali, discovering the influences and techniques of silversmithing that exist as prevalently back then as they do today!
In an exotic whirlwind of cultural, natural, spiritual and supernatural elements coming together, Indonesian artisans have formed a legacy in the world of jewellery that shall forever leave a mark on our land.

The production of ethical handmade jewellery is an important move towards a more sustainable future for the planet. But what is it about ethical jewellery that makes it…ethical?
With consumerism taking an increasingly ethical stance on travel, food and clothing, it’s no surprise that the jewellery industry is now making much needed changes too. Accessory lovers are still investing in the latest jewellery trends but they are now becoming aware of the environmental impact of precious metal mining, diamond mining and the working conditions of jewellery artisans in economically poor countries.
Cue the birth of ethical jewellery, something close to the heart of Aquila Jewellery.
What is ethical jewellery?
If the environment that the jewellery is produced in and the artisans who have made the jewellery have not suffered or been negatively impacted by the process, then the jewellery is considered ethical, according to MarieClaire.
What are the fundamentals of ethical jewellery?
What is handmade jewellery?
Made by hand, with each jewellery piece being designed piece by piece, handmade jewellery is created by jewellery artisans who use select tools for the processes. The materials they work with are raw metal. They apply age-old cultural and regional methods and do not use moulds or parts that are premade.
Handmade jewellery is a much slower process than factory made alternatives due to the care and attention taken. An example of this is our Agonda collection, hand hammered in Indonesia. To find out more about the uniqueness of handmade jewellery, read here.
Why is ethical handmade jewellery important?
The process of ethical handmade jewellery making is very much an ‘open book’ which reveals what is done, how it is done and where all parts come from (and go to). It is important because if each of the processes involved are visible, they are accountable and with accountability comes responsibility.
What are the benefits of ethical jewellery?
What power does the buyer have when buying ethical jewellery?
When a customer buys ethical handmade jewellery, they are using their buying power to invoke positive change in a sometimes unregulated and often dangerous industry. The buyer can also ask the jewellery seller about the origins of the materials and resources and enquire about their ethical policies.
What are ethical jewellery certifications?
An example of a certification that verifies the status of ethical jewellery is Fairtade gold (they also have a certification for silver). It is an independent ethical certification for gold where the buyer supports small-scale miners as well as protecting the environment.
Crucially, the gold is sourced from certified mine sites which adhere to the necessary standards.
Another assurance label is Fairmined. Fairmined certifies gold from small-scale mining organisations and artisans who align with the best practice standards.
How is Aquila an ethical Jewellery brand?
Recycling Pledge
Here at Aquila we stand by our silver pledge, to only use recycled sterling silver for our silver pieces. The result of this is the saving of a huge amount of energy, electricity and carbon emissions that occur during the mining processes as smelting and new metal ore extraction doesn’t occur.
Responsibly Sourced Gold
We are pleased to say that our solid gold rings are made from regulated Swiss gold that is responsibly sourced and provided to our Goldsmith in India by the Indian Government.
Less waste
We recycle surplus, samples, end of lines and faulty items meaning there is a reduction of waste too.
Working conditions and pay for our artisans
We know our artisans by name. We have met them in person, we have seen where they work and the conditions in which they work. We know the pay they receive (we pay them!). We know that all of these components are legal and pass quality assurances.
It is very important to us that our artisans feel valued and appreciated. We have a great relationship with our Indian and Indonesian artisan teams and speak with them regularly. They are part of the Aquila Family and without them we wouldn’t exist!
All in all…
Ethical handmade jewellery is redefining the jewellery industry in increasingly positive ways. Transparency between brands and consumers is key in maintaining this important honesty that looks after human and non human lives. We at Aquila are proud to be amongst those brands.

Chokers are jewellery items that have danced in and out of fashion with frequency throughout the decades. And 2022 proves this is no different. Whether it’s textured gold, beaded or chunky faux diamond, chokers command attention as one of the latest jewellery trends to hit the new year.
Bold colours are in so why not try this chunky acrylic choker from Dovepreciousthings for a handmade jewellery piece that ticks the bold and bright boxes too. The choker trend of 2022 has no limits to how creative you want to get, so play with your personal style to make it work for you.
Body chains
There is a chance you purchased a body chain when they were in fashion back in the day because you thought they looked great on all the navel-baring, jeans-wearing pop figures of the ‘90s. If like us, you never actually wore it, 2022 presents an opportunity to fish it out of your jewellery box and put it to fashionable use.
According to Cosmopolitan, skinny or chunky, gold or silver body chains are the look to go for. The chains on the runways have been seen to extend over the neck and shoulder, stomach and/or anywhere else on the torso. Chain belts with charms are also making a comeback with large links and even larger charms.
Body chains hang effortlessly off the body and present something of an exotic and boho look with their drapes of precious metal creating a layered effect across the body. This delicate and minimal silver body chain from SunshineyStore fits the bill nicely.
Upper arm cuffs
Another blast from the past, these cuffs are designed to lightly curl around the upper arm (bicep). People are wearing them with short sleeved tops and even over long sleeved tops. Everyone is talking about this must-have item with metal, leather, resin, plastic or really any kind of material hitting the mark.

Earthy materials
Natural materials and gemstones are in for 2022, so opt for handmade jewellery that is designed using seashells, wood, turquoise stones and crystals. The larger the stone and the louder the material, the better. Try this natural, handmade moon stone pendant necklace from CeylonClassic for a statement piece that comes from the earth.Stacking - everything

What is handmade jewellery?
Made one piece at a time, handmade jewellery is designed by hand, under the care of a skilled jewellery artisan, using raw metal and tools. It is then finished using traditional regional or cultural design techniques according to jewelrydesigns.com. All of this is done without prefabricated parts. There is no set timescale per piece but experience will tell the artisan how long it should take.
How can you tell handmade jewellery from factory made?
There are a number of ways to tell if jewellery is factory made or handmade.
Check for a hallmark or stamp
If a piece is handmade it will have a hallmark or stamp. A hallmark is a necessary UK Government stamp on all precious metal items to verify the item’s purity. For example, Aquila’s sterling silver jewellery has a 925 stamp (the sterling standard) on its pieces displaying that each item is 92.5% silver and 7.5% an additional metal (copper). It is an official mark of quality.
A mass produced piece of jewellery may not have such a stamp because the quality of metals and type of metals used are not always verified. For more about what stamps on jewellery mean, have a read about our post breaking down the subject.
Quality of metal (and lifespan)
Handmade jewellery will generally last much longer than factory made due to the quality of the metal. Additionally, all the hours it took the artisan to craft the piece will result in an item that stands the test of time. The artisan usually chooses the precious metals they use too.
Artisan jewellery is created using high quality metals such as Aquila’s 925 sterling silver and 9ct gold vermeil. Both are highly durable. If you aren’t sure what vermeil means, we’ve summarised it here for you.
Oppositely, mass produced items made by machines use lower quality metal and are not only more likely to break but are more likely to tarnish, leaving that infamous green mark on your finger. They also commonly react with sensitive skin causing an allergic reaction due to metal reactants like nickel being used in the alloy.
It’s also true that factory made jewellery usually operates on quotas that ensure the fastest speed of manufacturing. If there is a quicker way to make the jewellery that means cutting costs then that route will be taken - not always resulting in the best outcome for the wearer.
Imperfect vs perfect
All handmade jewellery is imperfect because it is made by hand and however skilled the artisan, it is impossible to create identical marks on each item. However, that is what many people love about this type of jewellery!
The piece you wear is bespoke to the wearer in many ways. Take for example our Agonda gold hammered bracelet. Hammered by hand, every indentation is different in depth, size and placement across all of the products and range.
People who follow fashion and trends love the polished, honed look of the jewellery for sale in the shops with its uniform appearance. It may be that they have seen their favourite celebrity or fashion-forward friend wearing the same item and want it for themselves. This leaves no room for imperfection in each item, they must be manufactured identically.
Thickness of the precious metal
Along the same lines as the quality of metal, the thickness of the ‘plating’ of gold or silver jewellery differs greatly between handmade and mass-produced. You might find a gold ring from a highstreet shop is ‘gold plated’ when in fact it is gold painted from a non-gold source or the plating is so thin (0.25 microns or less when the standard is 2 microns) that it rubs off soon after wear.
Handmade gold jewellery makes sure its unique qualities shine by choosing thick gold vermeil, like for example, our Tenayuca gold ring. Each gold vermeil item from Aquila is 2 micron gold thickness with this piece no different. Treat hand crafted jewellery with care and attention and avoid interaction with harsh chemicals and they will look like the day you bought them for many years to come! Follow our cleaning guide for more information.
Price
For all the reasons above the price point for unique handmade jewellery is higher than factory made items and is a giveaway as to its quality. It’s been said many times because it is true - you get what you pay for.
What are the handmade techniques Aquila uses?
Here are a couple of the traditional hand crafted techniques our artisans use with our jewellery so you can see how special they are.
Jawan
Indonesia is famed for its unrivaled natural beauty, beaches, gorgeous weather and skilled craftsmanship. The workmanship of jewellery in Indonesia is of the highest quality and most unique detail according to jewellery blog elf925.com. They are famed for their care for detail and emphasis on symmetry in their jewellery pieces. Often their artisans’ creations feature intricate filigree or Jawan techniques.
Some Aquila pieces like the Brighton ring or the Ubud collection display Jawan work. The technique itself involves very small, spherical balls of precious metal hand-soldered into a unique pattern, with their shiny appearance forming a contrast to a black oxidised backing, states Tribal Hollywood men’s jewellery.
Hammered
Hammered jewellery may be familiar to you as it is a popular technique that artisans use in both silver and gold jewellery. Our Agonda collection has been handmade in Indonesia, with each piece having a unique set of hammered indentations. Our skilled artisans hand hammer each piece of precious metal using a chasing hammer and an anvil giving a delicate texture to each piece.
Why is it important to buy unique handmade jewellery?
Keep the romance alive
There is a certain romance about carefully crafted raw materials put together by hand. The jewellery piece you buy has had hours of work and design put into it, much like artwork in a gallery. It also has a sentimentality about it with the time and labour that it takes to perfect each item. That’s why handmade jewellery makes the perfect gift for special occasions like Christmas.
You can help the environment
There is a high chance that most handmade jewellery is far more ecologically friendly than factory produced jewellery because the process involves far less energy, saving greenhouse gas emissions and pollution especially if the precious metal is recycled. The same applies for ethically-sourced materials. The good news is many jewellers are investing in the planet and things are shifting a little; Aquila too, has a recycled silver pledge we’d love to share with you.
Support the economy in poorer countries
We are proud to work with the finest silversmiths and goldsmiths we know. Our gold pieces are made in India and our sterling silver and mixed metal pieces are made in Indonesia. We know the artisans well, have met them in person, know the settings in which they work, are in regular contact with them and admire their work as skilled professionals.
It is important to us that we continue to bring them work through our designs even after the pandemic has struck and form a strong bond and loyalty to contributing to their economy as we benefit from their craft.
Invest in independent entrepreneurs
Aquila Jewellery is based in Brighton, perhaps one of the most independent and entrepreneurial cities in the UK! Local and independent shops and brands thrive here because there is a shared entrepreneurial spirit and a love of the local. It is a city that is liberal, accepting of new ideas, accepting of all people and it is actively responsible for the environment. Brighton is Aquila Jewellery’s proud home.
Buying handmade jewellery invests in the entrepreneurial spirit of those that believe in their products and want to share their passion with others. They dare to be different, have a unique point of view and oftentimes have an inspirational story behind them. By buying handmade jewellery you are encouraging and allowing independent creativity in a world full of cookie-cut shapes where uniform is standard.
All in all…
Buying handmade jewellery is an investment in money, time, beauty and individuality. It often is a more ecological and ethical purchase and certainly one of quality, which avoids a throwaway mentality. It supports skilled communities all over the world and their centuries-old techniques. There are so many benefits to buying handmade things, so let’s celebrate the beauty of the imperfect.

A short history
The geographical land that became Hella formed around 11000 years ago after the last ice age with prehistoric rivers creating what are now small valleys in otherwise flat terrain, says funbiceland.
The first settlers who came to Hella were reportedly Irish Monks who lived in the caves nearby. A great source of salmon, Ytri-Ranga (still a popular fishing spot today) provided food. The town was officially founded in 1927, writes guidetoiceland, with Icelander Þorsteinn Björnsson building its first store by the bridge over the river in Gaddstaðaflatir.
Today, the town sits on Hringvegur known as ‘’Route 1’, a national road that famously loops around the whole of the country connecting all major dwellings. Hella has become increasingly popular for tourists who flock to see the Northern Lights and bright stars on a clear night.
Aquila Memories
Hella has a special place in Aquila’s heart due to our copywriter Clare getting married there under a small, locally known waterfall not too far from Hella.
The wedding party stayed at the Stracta Hotel, the ideal spot for stargazing and one of the best in the area to spot the aurora.
Whilst it was summer when the wedding took place and the aurora wasn’t seen during our short stay, clear skies allowed for a breathtaking amount of stars to be seen at night time.
You can spot the stars and the aurora at their brightest during November, December and January if you are happy to brave the elements. Northern Lights tours run from September and April.
This dense network of stars acted as inspiration for the Hella Gold Star Necklace and its silver counterpart. The midnight black skies of Hella are reflected in the black Meena work that fills the hand carved star shape on the pendant. The star shape itself came from any and every one of the hundreds of thousands of stars that shine in the Icelandic skies with the added sparkle of the Northern Lights.
The necklace’s lightly hammered circular pendant disk comes from the moon with its full appearance telling those who are spiritual that rest and relaxation are important when the moon is full. The warm glow of the 9ct gold vermeil and the bright lustre of the 925 sterling silver can be compared to the shimmering gleam of the stars and the aurora.
This kind of sentimental handmade pendant is the perfect Christmas gift for someone you love for a long lasting, durable piece of unique jewellery that celebrates nature’s beauty.
What to buy
With Hella being so small, the only shop to visit is the family run Litla Lopasjoppan where you can buy locally made wool hats, scarves, mittens, traditional Icelandic jumpers and some smaller gifts. When it comes to Iceland in general you might find that investing in a few locally made items is enough - the price and quality means you won’t need much else.
What to visit
Depending on the season you go there are a large number of outdoor activities to enjoy in Hella and the surrounding areas. Gamla Laugin or ‘The Secret Lagoon’ is a man-made pool 33 miles northeast of Hella. It is the oldest of its kind in the country and filled with natural hot springs made in the nearby geothermal area of Hverahólmi close to the village of Flúðir.
Head further south (21.3 miles to be exact) to the dynamic waterfall of Seljalandsfoss and take in the sheer scale and power of nature at work.
If tours are your thing or you want some group travel/pre arranged activities try Reykjavik-based wedding, event and activity planners Pink iceland like we did!
An example is a tour of the Caves of Hella, a set of mysterious caves with a rich history that offers seasonal tours right next to Hella, located on a family farm. Walk through the wide doorways and look up at the tall steepled ceilings in this unusual piece of human creation.
Vik is 57.7 miles south of Hella and home to Reynisfjarna, the famous volcanic black rock beach which is too incredible to miss. Seeing is believing as watching the waves crash with black sand under your feet is almost like being on another planet.
So there you have it! A little story from Aquila about why Hella is special to us and how it became the namesake for our pendant range.
What is the history of boho?
The abbreviation boho comes from ‘Bohemian’, a derogatory term given to Roma gypsies by the French people, thought to have begun in Bohemia, central Europe. Boho is the adjective now used in place of Bohemian. It describes someone with a nomadic lifestyle and appearance that exists on the fringe of society.
A certain time period is associated with Bohemianism. In the 1800s, political and social change was rife. With the recent shake ups of the 1798 United Irish rebellion and the boom of the industrial revolution, many French creatives were becoming increasingly disenfranchised and frustrated with the class system dictated by the bourgeois who denied their right to earn money through their trades.
This came to a head when rising 19th century French poet and writer Victor Hugo’s play ‘Hernani’ was prohibited from being performed at an auditorium. What followed was the Romantic Movement, giving a face and voice to the Bohemianism shift. A huge mass of unconventionally and outlandishly dressed artists and creatives flooded the auditorium on opening night causing an unsavoury view for when the bourgeois arrived to see the play. Despite protests, Hugo performed the play successfully for months.
Naturally, this very vocal and visual statement resulted in a widespread influence of Bohemianism across France, Europe and many other parts of the world until the end of the 1800s. However, it did not die with artists such as Van Gogh and writers like Jack Kerouac keeping the ideologies of the philosophy alive.
What does boho mean?
A Bohemian is an individualist. They are often creative people such as an artist, poet or performer and do not abide by societal norms. Being bohemian is a lifestyle, a worldly approach, a political stance and a form of rebellion. It is about transience, individuality, creativity and self expression.
The word boho when used in the media has shifted focus slightly to fashion, interior design and personal style. You can design your flat in a boho-chic style, style your hair, or have a boho style wedding. The connotations of individualism, free thinking and nomadism are still there and a modern ethnic and sustainable edge now features too.

What is the modern boho look?
The bohemian style resurfaced in modern day boho fashion during festivals in the noughties with famous faces such as Sienna Miller and Kate Moss leading the look. This time, boho was a way to talk about styling, from tousled hair to long flowy dresses, layered clothing and nature-inspired patterns. With a nod to the 60s and 70s hippie style, the look involved leather tasseled bags, gladiator sandals, easy to wear baggy layers and an effortless vintage appearance.
What is boho jewellery?
Boho jewellery is free spirited, earthy and rooted in nature. It often involves the stacking of rings or bangles, layered necklaces, stud earrings or long earrings. The emphasis is on ease-of-wear, natural materials and natural colours. Designs (such as engravings of feathers, animals or plants) are frequent. Check out Aquila’s hand carved Halong Bay sunburst pendant as an example.
The look sees contrasts of statement pieces such as the Kerala ring with minimal precious metal pieces like the beautiful boho-inspired jewellery collection Agonda. Metals are mixed and whilst some are only gold or silver, the more chunky tribal cuffs and chokers contain large gemstones of all colours, ceramic shells and other natural materials.
Boho jewellery is connected to all the nature around us and to those who love to experience travel. As a result anklets, belly chains and ear cuffs are commonly found with the look too.
Types of boho jewellery
From fashion led high street designs to luxury designer jewellery, it’s incredible just how many boho style jewellery brands there are in the UK and beyond.
Below are the categories they can be classified by:
High street
A majority of cheap boho jewellery can be found in UK high street shops. It is trend and fashion driven with cheap prices and inexpensive metals. Items are usually engraved gold or silver plated rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. The fashion styles come from iconography, graphics, shapes, and phrases associated with whatever is trending. Come summer, during the festival months, the trend is often boho. High street chains allow for affordable, seasonal jewellery. An example of this is New Look.
Wholesalers
Jewellery wholesalers in the UK buy boho inspired jewellery in bulk. They get a large discount for buying in bulk by the manufacturer. A lot of the time they import boho jewellery from India and other countries. These jewellery items are often statement pieces, oversized rings and necklaces with gemstones, beads and precious metals. The price point is higher than the high street counterparts. An example of this is boho-betty.
Luxury Jewellery Designers
This jewellery is made from top of the range precious metals of the highest calibre, expensive gemstones and crafted in their own workshops. They may work in crystals, ceramic and animal materials. The price point for designer jewellery is considerably higher than other jewellery on the market. Such jewellery also maintains a fairly good resale price due to the brand name. An example of this is Chloe.
Independent brands
Such brands sell individual jewellery pieces that are usually designed and made by the owners or designed by the owner and made by silversmiths or goldsmiths abroad. They are not made in factories. Brands like these take inspiration from themes such as sustainability, the exploration of the world and natural materials. Due to being crafted by hand each item is ever so slightly different. High quality metals are used such as 925 sterling silver. An example is Aquila Jewellery.
How is Aquila boho?
Our handmade high quality jewellery is boho in essence. Each piece from our range has a special meaning through its connection to a magical location somewhere on this beautiful planet. In a sense, each piece signifies a moment of freedom and a lifetime of not being tied to one path - there are so many paths to explore.
But, while travel is a strong theme for us, our boho inspired jewellery isn’t only about exploring the globe. It’s a tribute to that moment when we escaped the daily grind, we stripped back what we needed to one bag and we just wandered. And that can be anywhere. An open ended flight. A road trip. A walk to the forest. For us, our mixed metal, gold or silver boho jewellery is infused with a thinking that appreciates the little things and looks for the wonderment in life.
We love and wear our own items. They are not factory made, mass produced or fashion driven. We care about the planet and have a recycled metal pledge. Boho to us isn’t a template for our designs, it’s a feeling and a lifestyle.
All in all
Boho jewellery comes in a huge amount of forms. From fast and affordable, high cost and high quality to earthy and sustainable. It is a look that can be as much or as little as you want, as extravagant or as simple as you need. What it really comes down to is the person wearing it and their inner boho.
